Apparently the new iMac have shown up at some Apple stores. There's a thread at MacNN about it. An interesting read.

Some people here have posted the same thing. They are of course only display models.

Good. I'll probably be going to Palisades tomorrow so hopefully they'll have the new iMac. Maybe if they don't this weekend I'll get to Tice's Corner.

The $1799 iMac will be available for purchase at the retail Apple Stores on the 21st.

I've heard that too. I wonder when people who pre-ordered will get them?

The 21st? I'm impressed. When most companies say "end of January" they mean the 31st of January at the earliest.

Dang, a week and a half? That's horrible! I was hoping it would be at least 3 weeks, so my initial infatuation with the new iMac would fade enough that by the time I actually COULD buy one, I could restrain myself. If I see one of those things in 11 days, I might have to pull my wallet out.

Luckily, I don't live within a bazillion miles of an Apple store, and it'll be a miracle if CompUSA gets one of those on display before I retire.

Recently Apple has generally beaten the availability dates on the new iBooks, iPod, etc. Not like the old days!

They're actually showing a shipping estimate on the Apple Store (online) right now.

    3-5 weeks.

    Yikes.

    5 weeks - that's March 14th....

Must be taking LOTS of orders...

Seems like every other individual on this Forum has pre-ordered one! Imagine how many they'll sell when people can actually look at it and think about taking it home RIGHT NOW.

    EXACTLY, sizzler!

I DIDN'T order mine from the Apple store because I want the supreme satisfaction of walking in to my local Apple retail store, plopping down the cash and strolling out with one, yelling at everyone "HEY...look at what the **** I got, BABYYYYY!"

But seriously, I think the potential for non-Mac users to walk into an Apple Store on a whim, seeing one of these (and all the cool iApps and what they do) and then losing their minds and buying one is VERY high.

They always put two feature items in the Apple retail storefronts. Currently, most have a HUGE, oversized iBook in one window and an iPod display in the other. One of those are going to get replaced by this new iMac on a spinning little round shelf and people strolling through the malls are going to IMMEDIATELY be drawn to it and stand there freaking out and googling at the mind-blowing coolness of it all.

I just visited the Clarendon store in Northern Virginia and yikes(!) is the new iMac impressive. It's also pretty sturdy and could easily support a 17" LCD. And the arm moves as smooth and quietly as can be.

So I talked with one of the salesman who suggested that I could get one faster by signing up to pick one up at the store when the first shipment arrives rather than ordering it on-line. I'm around number 25 or so on the Clarendon list. I have no idea if this is actually faster or not, but why not give it a try. Anyone else get this line?

If you go to the Apple store and select the SD model it will say 3-5 weeks.
