Good links for DMG info?

I've been looking for documentation for all the different disk image formats, but so far I've found nothing. Apple's Help, and their knowledge base documents, are utterly useless; these tell me how to make a disk image, but say nothing about the merits of each type of disk image, and nothing about how they work.

Anyone know some good links for the scoop on disk image formats? Or if anyone is bored, could they explain them to me?

So does nobody know, or am I just so out of it that this is like asking how to search for files in the Finder?

Another Google search came up with a fair bit on .dmg images, but still nothing on sparse images. And so they remain mysterious to me.
