If these machines aren't fast enough for you, I don't know what to say. These are professional machines, and I have no problem believing that the new DP 1 GHz G4 will outmatch the 2 GHz P4. The P4 may be clocked high, but from my experience with high clocked Pentiums, they always have shaky performance.

302% faster at DVD encoding than a 2Ghz P4. Mmmm good.

    " silicon-on-insulator (SOI) fabricated MPC7455 and MPC7445 processors"

"as it will further enhance the performance of our COTS processor products,"

"Motorola has achieved the highest benchmark scores certified by EEMBC to date in all five application areas.

    Automotive/Industrial: 889.3 Consumer: 122.6 Networking: 30.4 Office Automation: 1238.6 Telecommunications: 27.2"

"Motorola is helping to raise standards both for measuring processor performance and for the way embedded processors are marketed.""

"making the devices ideal for applications in the wireless and portable arenas."

"increased from 8 to 16 to support efficient embedded operating systems through high speed mapping of additional large blocks of data."

"Our strong focus on communications and networking enables customers to develop smarter, simpler"

Not a mention of Apple OR DESKTOPS!

    Apple, Are You Listening!

Heck, Ericsson got mentioned. Shows just how high Apple is on Motorola's priority list. Waiting for faster desktop processors from Motorola is very ironic.

"One significant adopter of the MPC7445 is Ericsson, a leading supplier of wireless infrastructure equipment, who has chosen the product for a part of their GPRS backbone system. The MPC7445 is allowing Ericsson to meet the highly demanding solution criteria and time-to-market needs that their customer base demands from them."

So what do you think the "consumer" category is supposed to refer to?

What would be their point in mentioning Apple there? In the desktop computing market, there simply aren't a lot of potential customers for Motorola except for Apple (who obviously don't need any advertising to be convinced to use PPCs). In the communications business, on the other hand, there are a lot of potential customers at hand, and convincing them to consider PPCs for their products is probably a lot easier done by giving an example of someone big in the same market who uses PPCs rather than someone from a completely different (and also completely saturated) market.

    So. My point exactly

    [quote]RazzFazz ""consumer" category"<hr></blockquote>

I don't know, but it doesn't seem to include desktop computers.

Look, I have nothing against Motorola. The G4 processor is great, especially for embedded applications. Just look at it's performance in DVD encoding, it's astounding.

But, since Intel and AMD went to war, it obviously is not in Motorola's best interest(re:at least it appears that is their position) to compete in manufacturing desktop cpu's.

I don't have the answers, but Apple will continue to fall further and further behind unless something changes. What I don't know, I wish I did and I'd venture to say that Apple would too.

Maybe the G5(re: I expect it to be intoduced in very late 2002 or early 2003) will answer some of the problems, I doubt it though because Intel and AMD are not standing still.

Maybe, Apple can fund Motorola's R&D to a much greater extent? and prod them to increase the rate of development? I do know one thing, moving Mac OS X to X86 is NOT the answer.

Maybe Motorola and AMD could collaborate? I doubt it, since IBM is part of AIM and may object, by the way when does AIM end, if ever?

800 MHz PM G4, no LCD, no superdrive, 256 MB of RAM, 40 gig drive, ATI radeon 7500, Gb ethernet -$1600

so for an extra $300, you loose an 15 inch LCD, and gain 100 MHz, extra 128 MB of RAM, an ATI radeon 7500 over the Geforce2 MX, and Gb ethernet over 10/100.

don't know bout you guys, but it seems like the 100 MHz, upped gfx card, extra 128 MB of ram, and upped ethernet don't outway (or come too short of) the 15 inch LCD. so why is the PM G4 an extra $300? this can't remain like this for long...</strong><hr></blockquote>

Keep in Mind Apple is offering a $500 rebate when you buy a PowerMac with an Apple Display (even on education pricing) So with Apple's 15" going for $599 you have a net $99 LCD display. So for about $400 you get expandibility (PCI SLots and readily accessible

full size DIMM slots), upgradable video (display and card), 100 Mhz more clock speed and a 33% faster bus speed. I'm still not sure about the low end G4's overall value proposition but I at least wanted to be fair to Apple.
