A nice victory in the Mac vs. PC eternal war
Many times on these forums I've complained about how my boss always insists on buying incredibly unstable, high-maintenance, but EXPENSIVE notebooks PCs from IBM.
1-2 years back I scored a small victory in convincing him to buy his stepson a graphite iMac DV and his step daughter a Pismo when each of them was going to UO.
But every time this guy was ready to upgrade to a new machine, he toyed with the idea of buying something Mac before chickening out and going with what was safe.
When I got my iBook combo a couple months ago, I showed it to him and he gushed over it, going on and on about how "elegant" and "beautiful" it was, and saying "Those guys sure know how to do it right, don't they?" Within the week after that, he had a catastrophic failure of his newest IBM laptops followed by a catastrophic failure of one of the previous ones he had handed down to his wife, and when I helped him fix those he said "One of these days I'll be brave enough to just get a Mac."
Today, I took my new iPod into his office to show him and he was gushing and raving about it again. Then he asked me about the new iMac which he saw on the Time magazine cover, asking me if he could really turn his DV home movies into a DVD, etc. He really sounded like he was starting to think seriously about the possibility, but he's said things like that before, then ended up spending twice as much on an IBM.
So after lunch today, he comes into my office with a handful of those mini-brochures that Apple has for all their products. He's been down to CompUSA and he's been checking out the TiBook and reading about the iMac, and he was under the impression that the Ti would let him not only play DVDs, but record them.
When I told him the only options for DVDR were the top iMac or one of the top 2 Powermacs, he said "OK, I'm ready to do it. Tell me where I can get one of the iMacs the fastest way possible." He wants one tricked out with maximum RAM (preinstalled -- money is no object), probably an iPod, Airport, DVD blanks, Office X, the works.
So now I'm helping him investigate where he's likely to be able to get one in the forseeable future. There don't seem to be any quick options for people ordering right now!
Anybody with any pointers on where to get a new Superdrive iMac right away, post it here.

I've been in your shoes (probably not your budget) in setting up Macs to converts and new users.
If money is no object, I'm sure the gelding would part with his---for a price.... .
within a week the highend will be in stock most places probably.
I always bought through Outpost. they don't always get the earliest shipment but they usually get a big ass shipment of several hundred a week after everyone's first so that may be good. plus no tax
Authorized Apple Resellers, No Tax (at least to me in Cali) and excellent customer service.
I've bought a few systems from them and they rule. I'm selling my Dual 533 and getting a 933 from them as soon as they arrive!
The Computer Store by Lloyd Center, though it is always a few weeks behind getting new stuff in compared to other parts of the country, but they are good people. They used to have great refurbs on the floor, but now they send them on to somewhere else.
The other one is called Apple___ somethingorother out by the airport and has what the other store doesn't. It's in the phonebook.
Oh and ya gotta love no sales tax!
Is that the deal? Hmm... Too bad there isn't much Post-Production work up there.

I just meant no APPLE stores. I actually live in Irvington, within walking distance of the Computer Store by Lloyd Center.
And I bought my Umax from PowerMax, too.
I think the other one you mentioned is Apple Mac Pac (what does that name mean, anyway? "Pac?")
Sizzle: I have no idea what the "Pac" means either. It would be nice having an Apple Store, but The Computer Store already forces me to drive out of my way to look for refurbed equipment...what would an Apple Store do? And like baseball and the big REI store, it just gives me a reason to go to Seattle once in a while. Actually Seattle doesn't have a store either, does it. I would have thought that Redmond would be high on Steve's list.
