Yeah, but the IM software has to be used by both parties. What if the other person doesn't have IM software on their account. And even if they did, if it's not on, they won't get the message immediately. A simple account 2 account messaging system would be nice.
Put IM in startup items, problem solved. The messages are instant for all practical purposes - I know I can chat as fast I can write - and they wouldn't see the message anyway before they login on their account. What do you mean, "if the other person doesn't have IM"? The problem at hand is one machine with two accounts that will be setup to communicate.
Good to hear you are getting things to work progmac. If there's going to be a hard part in this, it's probably how to make a notification/sticky for the other user. IM software would solve that, too, as long as it can run multiple copies simultaneously on the same computer and IP.

i have the folder action script set up on both users, so when i drop something into a folder, i receive a notification immediately (kinda pointless) and when the computer is switched to the other side, then that user receives a notice (this is what i needed)
bonjour always logs me out when i switch users. aim sets me to away, but bonjour logs me out (yes, i set the pref to set me to away, not take me offline)
