iTunes content updates tomorrow

Apple's iTunes Music Store did not roll-over today as it has historically done on Tuesdays, hinting that content announcements may be part of Wednesday's special media event. The store also failed to offer visitors an "iTunes New Music Tuesday" track and podcast.

As part of its content offerings on Wednesday, Apple is expected to announced that the iTunes Music Store will feature Madonna's new single "Hung Up" a full week before it's available in stores. The iTunes Music Store will also begin selling the pop singer's new album one day in advance of retail stores, complete with a special bonus track not shipping on retail CDs.

iTunes NYC after-party

Analysts and members of the media attending Motorola's iTunes phone launch after-party at Manhattan's Webster Hall will be treated to live performances from Common, The Juan Maclean and Stretch Armstrong, AppleInsider has been told.

The event will also feature an open bar and complimentary eats.

Jobs in Saratoga for horse races

Shortly after canceling plans to present the keynote address at this month's Apple Expo in Paris, sources say Steve Jobs on Saturday boarded his private Gulfstream V jet and flew to Saratoga, NY.

From there he was escorted via a Cadillac Escalade to the VIP seating area of the Saratoga race track for an afternoon of horse racing. Rumor has it that Jobs may have attended the races to watch his own horse compete, though there is no public record of him ever purchasing or owning a race horse.

Neither Apple nor representatives for Apple Expo have offered an explanation as to why Jobs suddenly backed out of hosting the opening keynote address at this year's show. However, it's believed that Apple may have been forced to push back several of its fall product introductions to a later date and venue.

iPod mini, high-end PowerMacs fading

Outside of Apple's direct distribution channels, stock of all iPod mini models has become increasingly constrained, sources are reporting. Apple is widely expected to refresh the smaller candy-colored players with flash memory-based storage and color screens. Current iPod minis contain monochrome displays and hard-disk-drive storage.

Meanwhile, the company's dual 2.7GHz PowerMac G5 appears to be fading fast. In the US, Apple lists the desktops for availability in 7 to 10 business days. However, some European Apple resellers have been told not to expect any further shipments of the high-end model. Instead, Apple has told these resellers that their best bet would be to settle for dual 2.3GHz models.

    "iPod mini, high-end PowerMacs fading"

    Interesting choice of words.

The iPod Mini should be repaced it seems. But what about the Powermac 2.7? Are the sales fading/ Is Apple going to replace it without replacing the ones below it?

Usually the term is "supply constrained".

I saw a mention on Macrumors (Page 2) about the new smaller iPod mini being called an iPod nano ... to that end I've done a quick mockup of what it might look like:

If Apple released an 'iPod nano' wouldn't that just negate the whole concept behind the iPod mini? Why would they keep both the mini and the 'nano'? Makes more sense to just christen the 'nano' as the new mini and leave it at that.

But I still don't believe that 'iPod nano' story (my confidence in Kevin Rose aside, of course).

i love steve but reading this part, i couldn't help but think of these lyrics:

Well I hear you went up to Saratoga and your horse naturally won

Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun

Well, you're where you should be all of the time

And when you're not you're with

Some underworld spy or the wife of a close friend

Wife of a close friend, and....

You're so vain, you probably think this song is about you.....

    MY GOD!!!

Thats it! People have wondered for years who that song is about- Mick Jagger Warren Beatty.... Its Steve!!!! He dates Joan Baez or ehl some famous female singer.

Course I think he was still in college when that song came out. But I agree it works.

    Now a question for all.

How about Apple move the mini to some flash based thinner thing and move the white iPod to th emini form factor. It could be a bit larger to accomodate the thicker hard drive. But people love the aluminum cylinder. No finger prints. I think it would be great. They could keep it white.

Utter nonsense. From what I understand, Apple is upgrading the existing line, to include color screen, smaller form factor, and longer battery life. There will be no overlap in products. It's just a refresh.

"....settle for 2.3ghz...." as much as i respect the g5 processor, settle is an apt word to use.... people have been 'settling' for the powermacs for a long time now

Maybe he has a hot piece of rear end he just can do without?

    Who gives a crap?

The fact people are monitoring his travel plans should tell you that stalking is just around the corner.

Enjoy the software and tools. Leave the man's private life to himself.

you would not believe the number of apple fans that would pay $5/month each just for a chip to be implanted in steve jobs so we would know exactly where he is every second of every hour of every day ~ as a fully-fledged google-earth style iApp and of course a dashboard widget

there would also be a carmen-sandiego-online-game "where in the world is steve jobs" for those who elect for the $1/month subscription version...

I was visiting the Apple Cupertino campus and saw Steve's car. His car has no license plate as to prevent people knowing who he is while driving on the freeway.

    BTW CosmoNut: haha, very witty

Revise your drawing. The new Mini is supposed to have a slightly smaller wheel and a slightly smaller (though with higher resolution) screen.

There was a story on TV this evening about the CEO of some oil company that used his jet to bring food and supplies to the hurricane victims and to help them evacuate. He challenged other CEOs to do the same. Just puts things into perspective. It seems that Steve Jobs has made a lot of uncharacteristic decisions lately. He doesn't seem like his old self not that I know him personally or anything.

It looks like the wheel is smaller or maybe my eyes are just playing tricks on me. Make it a little narrower and I'll buy it. I do wonder why they would need to use a smaller screen though. It looks like they could keep the iPod mini screen size as is and still make the rest a lot smaller. I hope they announce it tomorrow. If this event is just about that Motorola phone I'm going to puke.

He drew the wheel a hair smaller but it's still too big. He drew the screen rather larger than the original instead of smaller. That makes the wheel look smaller than it is.

one more quick mockup ... a little different.

YES YES YES one3.... that's excellent mockupness...

don't forget super scratch resistant too. i swear my iPod Mini revA is the first digital device i've ever owned that has sustained as much scratching and punishment, even the screen comes off hardly cosmetically affected.............

extra credit for the lanyard hole. stylin. and similar to the shuffle with hanging it round your neck, except it's more 'blinged out' with the iPod mini metallic finishes.

edit: scratch test benchmark: put your [device] in the same pocket as your keys. after a week, evaluate results.

edit2: as melgross pointed out, the screen might end up being smaller though, even if it is higher res and color, at the moment this is according to thinksecret IIRC
