Nanotubes are one of the breathroughs in nanotechnology - they're used for creating a variety of weeeeee structures and they're part of the future of nanotech. If we ever end up building a space elevator or intrasolar space craft you can bet nanotubes will be involved.
Nano tubes - capitalizing on that idea - even the lay folk have heard the term (vaguely) or will in the future. The truly geek among us hear it and love it.
I also wouldn't be surprised if they nixed the mini so that some day the big o'l fashion iPods could get smaller.
I'm not so sure. I don't think Apple will go any lower than 2" screen on its top end iPods. Thinner, yes. Also, I think once video comes, (if it comes) the GB will have to be a lot higher and thus that would create new bigger iPods if the current iPods did get smaller. Also, I think the key reason for nixing the iPod mini was pricing. What would you do? set a 6 gig for 275? For $25 more you can get a 20 and for $25 less a $40. That wouldn't work, Although I am very sad to see the mini go. The mini might (but I wouldn't count on it), come back when there are 8 and 10 1" drives and the nano price goes down a bit. I think with the nano now, the shuffle will probably NOT get a screen of any kind. I'm wondering though, with lack of the mini, won't Apples HD marketshare go way down and flash market share go way up? Also, I thought MP3 players over the next few years were to be decreasing because of HD players being preferd.
Ok, yeah, you can't connect the nano using FireWire. I really had to dig down to confirm that one, and even then its through omission. This kinda sucks as a far prefer FireWire and already have a couple FireWire dock cables.
I bet dropping FireWire helped reduce size and costs.
Ah well, I still totally want one. However I can't really justify replacing my rev A iPod mini until they bump the capacity. I expect 6 or 8 GB models sometime after MacWorld.
One thing I can't get over is how narrow it is! They should've made it wider! But overall, it's sooooo cool! I want to be the first one at my school to have it! I think I was the first to get the iPod there!
I was surprised that Apple totally pulled the mini - it's not even on the "Sales" page at a lower price. I have feeling that it will be back, however, "by popular demand" - just like the eMac.
As for the nano - I think it's fantastic and will be very hard to find at Christmas time. I would buy one if everyone in the family didn't already have an iPod of one type or another - and I'm over 60. When Apple can get my juices flowing they are doing something very good.

There is a mis-quote there. The speculation was that the new drive would come in between 8-10GB's.
It came out at 8. There aren't two drives unless something that I don't know about has happened. If you can find a 10GB on their site please let us know.

I need to hold and use one before I give up my second gen 4g mini. I love that thing, I am kinda nervous about taking this to the gym I have hit my mini in a case with a wiehgt before, so I am not sure about this...
I'm somewhat suprised to see the large number of somewhat negative posts regarding the new iPod Nano. I purchased my very first Apple product this year, a 512MB Shuffle.
At the time I was fairly torn between the Shuffle and the iPod Mini, but decided to go with the Shuffle due to its extremely compact size, the price point (I'm a uni student), as well as the lack of moving parts (and I've dropped my Shuffle a number of times during the time that I've owned it). I think the new iPod Nano is an absolutely fantastic looking new product, very much looking forward to seeing one in person.
Quite honestly, I don't think there is much to nitpick over this release, and it doesn't make very good business sense to sell two products at essentially the same price point and features. I'm a finance guy, not a marketing specialist, but I believe that the term for this is differentiation; I think it's wise from this perspective to discontinue the Mini at the same time that the Nano is being added to the line-up. Keep things simple.
If the iPod mini had never been released, I'd be complaining about the nano's price points. I complained about the mini's price points when it was released and it became the most popular iPod. I'm keeping my mouth shut on the nano because Apple obviously knows what they're doing.
you get the apple store ipod mini screen but the links dont appear to work. i'd pick up a mini on clearance, it'd be cheaper than the nano but more expensive than the shuffle. no color screen, but it'd be a bargain, i'd say.

Fair enough - that sounded wierd from the beginning that only the 2.7ghz's were running low.
Anyways - downloaded iTunes 5 this afternoon - is esentially the same, aside from the search bar, smart shuffle and the new !square! window - how dare they kill my rounded bit. Watching the waves in the top window also seems to go smoother.
