Error: Out of Memory - 2.5GB SDRAM!
Please help
I have a Dual 2.7GHz G5 Power Mac, with 250GB harddrive and 2.5GB DDR SDRAM.
I am using my mac solely for editing a feature film. I am two thirds the way through the edit and still have 103 GB remaining on the harddrive.
The only software that I have installed apart rom Final Cut Studio is Protools and thye Digi 002 Rack.
I am not starting to get the Error: Out of Memory warning and it will not even allow me to view footage.
It started off locking on when the cursor would spin and not stop. Thius would happen while logging and capturing footage. It would be preceded with a roar from the processor.
The about this mac states that I do have 2.5 GB Ram and when I go to the Activity Monitor is stats that I have 2GB free Ram - Even when I am being told out of memory.
I need help urgently! Is it something where Final Cut is not seeing the extra memory?
Any help would be gratefully received.

I am sure there is a simple reason but I am not sure what.
The cursor spinning error has caused me problems for a month. Regularly locking up 4 - 6 times an hour.
The Out of Memory error is new as of yesterday and it means I cannot edit my film.

How much free hard-drive space do you have left? (and yes, this question is relevant)
I have hardly anything installed on the Mac, only the software and the footage.

hmm... odd. With OS X's modern virtual memory system, you really shouldn't get a message like that. Things should only go wrong if hard drive space is getting low and there's no more swap space left.
From what you've said, I'm pretty sure the answer to this will be "no", but it's worth checking - have you installed ANYTHING (hardware and software) since the system was working fine? You wouldn't believe the problems that seemingly totally unrelated stuff, such as misbehaving fonts, can cause.
I'd recommend the following "usual voodoo": Perform each step, then check to see if the issue is resolved before moving onto the next step.
1) repair permissions
2) reset PRAM
3) Fish out your hardware check CD and use it to run the extended tests (which could take quite a while to run with the amount of RAM you have). Obviously, this step won't actually cure anything, but it'll rule out a hardware problem before you do anything more time-consuming.
4) Create a new user using the "accounts" preference pane of system preferences (press the little "+" button at the bottom of the list of users). Before logging in using this new user, move some of your video files into your "public" folder, that way the new user will be able to access the files. Use this new user name and password to log in to your machine, and perform the tasks that were giving you problems.
If things now work as normal, something's gone screwy with your original preferences or caches. Since it sounds like you don't have that much stuff set up on your machine, you may find it easier just to use the new user account to do your work in until you've finished editing.
5) Re-install the OS.
I found this. It might help.
Also, have you installed all the latest updates, such as 10.4.2, the Pro Application update 2005-01, Pro application support 3, and Final Cut Pro 5.0.2?
Finally, a brief scan of Apple's discussion forums suggest that CMYK graphics images can cause problems in FCP.

So, did you get this sorted then? If so, what was the problem?
No it hasn't.
I have tried removng the image and the Final Cut update, and FCP Rescue 5.
Nothing seems to work.
When I am logging the sound will just cut out and from there if I try to save or capture it locks up and I have to restart the comp.

Oh dear, doesn't sound good at all.
These problems that you are having just shouldn't happen. I would suggest that taking the time to visit a genius bar (I appreciate that could take a whole day depending on where you live) would be worth it.
I am scared doing anything drastic will loose my film.
My Mac must still be in warranty. I may put up with it until the edit is finished, then take it back and demand a replacement or my money back.
I have had the comp 5 months and have hardly anything on it, I have no idea what could be doing it...
I do appreciate all your help!

I ran that check when i was having problems with my new iMac and it came back "all is well" and then i took the iMac into the shop and they said the RAM was bad and it had messed up the logic board. They also told me that bad RAM is often missed by the check CD.

What "Out of Memory" can often mean is that you've simply hit a software bug, where, because of that bug, the program you're running is mismanaging memory in any number of ways... infinite recursion, memory "leaks," where memory which is supposed to be release isn't, miscalculated requests for memory, or requests for memory based on garbage data, etc. etc.
Please don't take "out of memory errors" to necessarily, literally mean that the real job you're trying to would or should actually require more memory than you have, or think that having more memory necessarily would fix such problems.
