My mini does not create a bright screen, is this normal?

Bascially, I got a new mini for work and plugged it into my monitor and the picture on the monitor is not as bright or crisp as the picture on my PC box. I noticed this at home on my new mini there too but didn't think to much of it.

Any one else noticed this or is it me?

I can't say anything imparticularily but you should check the cables you are using, You don't want to downgrade quality. You might not have noticed in your home if the lighting is different. It might also be your lcd, I Have a pair of Dual 19" and these things can light up my whole living room.

    VGA

I am having to use a VGA because I am going through a kvm switch.

That could be the problem. It's always better to avoid adapters. If your display has a DVI port on the back, try to snag a DVI cable and hook that to the mini rather than the VGA+adapter setup.

Look up in the apple support forums. There are tons of people having your exact problem. My mini works fine with a 21" Sony Crt but dim with my Lacie electron Blue 22".

There's a guy who has made a list of the monitors that are affected by this problem.

    Update:

In order to corect the problem I have to go to a DVI monitor that is supported. No problem, except that I am using a KVM switch so this means, I have a dim screen as long as I am forced to use the VGA port (I am not purchasing another switch for DVI becuase they cost $$$).

SJ overstated the bring your own monitor keyboard mouse crap. You thik someone would have said, hey, the VGA adapter sucks!

Have you tried optimizing in ColorSync? Mac gamma is different than PC gamma I believe.

Yes, but it is a lot better but it is still dim. I may end up ordering a DVI switch before it is all over.

As pointed out above, this seems to be a HUGE problem with the mini's. The VGA coverter makes the dim display.

how come this is only a problem with the mini? We don't hear problems hooking pb's up to vga monitors for example. Is it just the different video card?

The rumor mill says it is just that. The video card is to blame and some people believe a software patch could fix the problem but who really knows at this point. These rumors come off the disscussion boards at Apple's website and let me tell you, people are pissed off about it.

    Thanks for the heads up.

I had a PC switcher go to great lengths with supercal. Yet switching back and forth with his KVM still exposes the mini's abysmal vga output. Now I know we're not insane.

There is a guy on Macintouch would claimed to fix his problem with a third party DVI to VGA connector, which makes me wonder if the connector Apple supplies isn't the problem.

    This seems unlikely.

DVI/VGA adpaters are purely physical adapters, merely changing the shape of the plug.
