New computer! what was I thinking??!!!!??

I finally got my new iMac g4! (im sure how some of you already heard the story of how the mean fed ex lady made ME go carry it out of the truck since she couldnt lift it and refused to try.) but i forgot what a pain it is to get a new computer and set it up again. by the time it's tweaked to perfection, it'll be time to get a new one.

being an OS 8.6 user, OS 9 is not too hard to figure out, but still takes some getting used to. and OS X might as well be an alien language. i cant get anything installed!!! heck, i cant even get online. i called verizon dsl and they dont offer support for OS X and it wont connect on classic mode or rebooting in OS 9 either. the tech support people finally gave up on me, since they couldnt figure it out either. so now i am back on the old powerbook g3 so i can post a 'help me help me' message here. <scream>

anyway, i have some cool pix, but i cant get online to use itools. i dont have any dial-up service or minutes, but maybe i can try getting a free trial account on earthlink if the dsl refuses to work.

how's it going with other people's G4's and installing their old favorite programs and getting online?

verizon does not support any version of OS 9 above 9.0.4 because their "macPoet" software is incompatible.

It works fine in OS X. To set it up you have to go into the network control panel and go to the PPPoe settings and type your user info in there. then OS X will do the rest and MacPoet is not needed.

If you really need to use it in OS 9 you may have luck getting a compatible MacPoet if you e-mail earthlink tech support but being that you aren't an earthlink subscriber it may be difficult.

No reason not to use OS X though

sorry to hear about your problems mac's girl...i went from an iMac G3 with os 9.1 to iMac G4 with X....no real problems...X was a bit confusing, but not too much....and we are only on phone lines way out where i live...they tell me cable is coming in the spring, they just won't say what year ....

X is pretty sweet once you get used to it...i have not been able to crash it in a weeks plus use....two of the three times i booted to os 9.2 i froze the system...so i pretty much stay away from that (and classic is SLOW)...if they can get a few more drivers for X and get Quark and Photoshop and a few other apps to X, i think i would gladly say goodbye to os 9 forever...

can't help you with your dsl problems....but i have been complaining about how slow 56k modems are (we have T3 line at work...damn that is sweet)...but i guess 56K that works is better than dsl that doesn't...hope you get your connection up and running soon....try posting at the genius bar and see if they can help...best wishes...g

heck ya, i'd rather be using OS X. wow, im assuming you have verizon dsl? let me try what you suggested. im going to disconnect the modem from this ratchety old powerbook and see if i can get the imac connected. i'll post tomorrow and let you know if it worked or not. the support ppl at verizon were no help at all. no interent = no fun. and its been a frustrating 9 hours so far.

thanks in advance. ive got my fingers crossed...

Ok ppl, here's the latest frustration report,

we finally decided to call apple support to see if they could help us get online. i tried applenut's suggestion, but i was still unable to connect (although he was defn telling us the right thing to do). the answer was really simple, it turned out, and the support guy had us surfing the web in 3 minutes. the computer was going to the internal modem instead of thru the ethernet, although it was set up properly in the PPoe. there was some screen where it listed the internal modem and the ethernet, but you had to switch their order so ethernet was first (even though both were active!).

anyway, getting on verizon is easier now, since i dont have to launch anything other than IE (before i had to manually connect, since verizon is not an "always on" connection.) anyway, i have had no notable problems with service interruption with verizon in the last several months (since they upgraded the system) and would i recommend them. however, dont count on them for tech support. it often takes 10 calls to find someone with half a brain, and even then they dont know much, and they really know zippo about macs. anyway, their $49.95 plan gives you dsl speeds of up to 768Kbps, which is slow compared to the max 1.5 mbps you get from earthlink. does anyone here have earthlink dsl who can comment on the actual speeds and mac support?

anyway, guess what gelding-- i crashed OS X already!!! hahahha! i crashed it so bad it wouldnt even restart and i had to unplug it and reset the pram. i was trying to make a webpage at itools and i still cant figure out how to load the photos onto it. thats how the crash started... if you cant get your OS X to crash, just invite me over for 10 minutes and it shall be done!

still have more apps to install, but i think im going to go to the mall for a short break. i need to unwind.

MacsGirl, did you get a "kernel Panic" or just the infinite spinning wheel? You can usually work your way around this without having to restart by doing a force quit (command, option, escape). You can even restart the finder! It's very cool, and will save you the restart time. I've been using OSX as my primary OS on my iBook since November (when office came out). Although for the most part I love it, one of my biggest problems is that there are some network hangups when using iTools or connecting to slower networks. Although it may seem like it crashed...it's just looking for files in you itools slot and taking a really long time to do it. I hope this helps you get more joy out of your OSX iMac experience. For graphics editing I use the Corel Draw Suite and Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator 10 is great. I can't use Photoshop but paint is a good interim substitute. Now if I could just get my stats apps. and bibliography program carbonized I'd be happy. Again, good look MacsGirl. Sexy Setup.

    Taq,

I dont know what happened, it was weird. The windows that were open started to break up and the whole screen was hard to see. the cursor arrow was a pinning wheel and it kept spinning and spinning and spinning. i couldnt do anything to the computer, even force quit. finally i had to turn it off from the back. but when i restarted the screen was still black (nothing came up) but the wheel was still spinning! after this point, it wouldnt restart preoperly anymore until i unplugged it and re-plugged it. on start up, i reset the pram. then it was fine.

however, a little later, i put the imac to sleep, and it wouldnt wake up anymore! even the power button wasnt working. it was so crazy. i think my husband shut off the power strip because he tried for the longest time to wake it and he finally gave up. we havent tried putting it to sleep again. maybe i'll just shut down. i heard there was a problem with sleep in the powermac desktops, but there is no firmware update or any info for the imac g4 regarding this problem. anyway, i hope this was just a freak thing.

sounds very werid...don't think it is an iMac thing as sleep works great on mine (i never turn it off)...on my old iMac sleep is a little iffy....lately it has been ok, just that the mouse freezes at wake up...you have to remove the usb from the keyboard and replug it and it is fine...that is on the old iMac...on this one, sleep works great...as i said, i have yet to crash it, i did force quit iPhotos once because of the spinning wheel thing, but force quit with X is great (like in Windows NT...the best thing i like about NT is the ability to quit frozen programs without shutting down the whole computer....i would talk to apple tech people and maybe get Drive X from micromat....i love techtool pro from them...drive X should be here monday in the mail and i want to see how it works with the new iMac...but things seem cool here....thanks for the photos at your website and hope things get better for you...using my new mouse...very nice..doesn;t have the random flying across the screen that the pro mouse had...plus it has a scroll wheel, yah!..the right and left click and scroll work with X without software...the thumb button and push down on scroll wheel do not....might get usb overdrive soon....g

Thank you very much Mac's Girl for the pics. I won't have mine until Tuesday, but by then everyone may already have their iMac G4.

That's weird. One thing I have noticed is that if you just press the power once it kind of refreshes the screen. You have to hold it down for about 10 seconds to get it to restart. I locked mine up too...and it was with iPhoto, when I tried to load up my pics. The pics were up, but the computer froze. Maybe there's a problem with iPhoto...don't have problems with the iBook. Anyway, just a though.

Whatever, I wouldn't have lifted that computer out. She gets paid to deliver stuff you should have made her lazy a** lift the computer. It's not like she's hauling cement here. File a complaint with fedex.

Now that I'm over that, did you have any more problems with the computer freezing?

no, i didnt have iphoto problems yet. but it's still new, and im sure there will be some revisions soon. when i 'crashed' i was using itools and idisk, but i didnt realize it was so slow. thats how i got into trouble, by clicking a bunch of buttons when i probably should have been patient. the funny thing is that i cant tell when the machine is doing something. on my powerbook, i could hear it crunching away, so you knew it wasnt frozen, just processing. lol! im so silly...

i just cant understand the sleep thing... havent tried it since. restarting is so fast, i just power down instead.

hey, im a new yorker, and so my first instinct was to curse the B**ch out. but then again, she was going down to the truck to wait for me (while i put on a coat, socks, and shoes) and i didnt want her to have any "accidents" with my imac because she wanted to get even. also, i was so happy to get it, i figured i should do what she says or she'll drive away and send someone else on monday. i should complain tho...

wanna know what she said to me when i got down to the truck? she kept saying, "it's just a computer screen." i didnt correct her (as i was not in any mood to converse with this lady) but was pelased on some level that she thought it was too small to be a whole computer.

anyway, no major probs lately. im taking a break before setting up a LAN as well as other installing some non-OS X apps. im sure you all will be hearing some more b**ching and moaning from me then. LOL!

    thanks for asking.
