video files though iTunes

I have now downloaded iTunes 6 and would like to import all of my video files into the video library so I can view both my music and video libraries through iTunes.

What file types are compatible to play though iTunes? I have watched videos through it before yet I cannot remember the file extension. Most of the video files i have are either .avi .mpeg or divx encoded. What do i need to do/purchase in order to allow these files to play (i presume through quicktime via iTunes)?

Cheers

    .mp4 (either standard MPEG-4 or H.264)

You can use something like ffmpegx or Quicktime Pro to transcode it.

BTW, here's a hack in case you don't want to transcode all that video...

Cheers that hint is the perfect solution.

Do you know of anyway to set up some kind of automater action to do the 'save reference' for me and then import it into iTunes?

Just glancing at Automater, it doesn't look like there are any functions for saving reference movies in Quicktime, but I bet you could do this with plain AppleScript if you have some time to search around...
