Don't expect the 7800 video card soon
In a moment of pure crazyness, I ordered a quad G5 ( my web order of the dual 2,3 ghz powermac was invalid) via the phone service of the Apple store. I asked the guy some info about the 7800 video card.
His anwer was clear : they had a call from Apple saying that there won't be any 7800 video card, and that they will edit the pages about the powermac G5. They had the info 5 hours ago, and it was in the french Apple store.
It's unfortunate.
I think that Apple did not want to experiment the previous problems : announce something and not be able to deliver. May be the card will reappear on the Apple store, but don't expect to see this BTO option soon.

Massively unfortunate, given reviews/specs on the standard 6600. Ugh.
It is looking like the intermediate graphics card option is out the window. I'm not sure I want to buy with the current configuration for the 2.3, and the quad is too expensive for me.
More waiting?

It seems that we have no choice.
It's the middle class card, or the ultra pro card. The high end gamer card (the 7800 GT) is out of the window.

Perhaps, like the X800 (?), it will be added as an option later. IN the meantime, though, we've wasted money on a 6600 - though wasted is saying it too strongly. Gaming isn't my priority at all, and I want the machine sooner rather than later. This all just makes a video card upgrade later - a certainty, and I would have rather spent the $300 difference on any number of things. Towards a second flat panel, say.
New 2.3 benchmarks are encouraging - but kinda as expected, sounds similar to previous 2.3 speeds except perhaps for dual-proc applications that need close intercommunication.

The advantage of the PCI Express, over AGP, is that you lose less money. Some people might be interested by having several video cards. With the AGP, there was place only for one card. A lame AGP card interested nobody.
A geforce 6600 is certainly perfect for a second video card.
I can't even tell you how jealous I am that you are constantly buying brand new top-of-the-line Macs.

I am sure your time will come.

??? We're comparing the general 6600 (not 6600 GT) vs 7800 GT? The 6600 prices run $100-150, and the 7800 GT is $400+ ...
For what it's worth...I just called the Apple Store US and the guy told me it was a glitch on the order site and that the card IS available. He expected they would have it fixed this morning but he said probably in the next day or two. I asked him if he was sure that it wasn't a supply issue, and he said it was just the website that was wrong.
YES!
Lemon Bon Bon
And the 7800 will probably be $350 more based on what I was told.
