if anyone cares to compare, i get 29 fps in the diablo 2 expansion game running in OS 9 (imac-2, 800mhz, 768mb ram). i'm not even sure if that's good or bad. but it slows down to single-digits whenever there was a rush of enemies on the screen, and there is a serious lag. a bit disappointing. any other Diablo players out there?

If it makes you feel any better, most computers that run diablo II lag at those points. I've had a 1.2Ghz AMD, with 512mb of ram using a Geforce2 64mb lag at those points, so don't be too disappointed

I honestly haven't noticed much of an improvement with Diablo II on my iMac 800 vs. my iMac 333. The screen's nicer etc, but it certainly doesn't scream.

I do find, however, that Unreal is much better as is Quake II. Unreal Tournament still sucks.

so i guess we can safely blame the makers of diablo? i noticed that diablo2 WITHOUT the expansion set ran better and had fewer lags.

did you play "return to castle wolfenstein" yet? i want to know performance-wise if it's worth buying.

Sorry, no. Mrs. Thoth2 only lets have a game now and then. She doesn't understand. Actually, I'd like to know about Black and White and if the iMac can keep up with that. Anyone have frame rates on that?

you put MrsThoth2 on this board, and i'll have a woman-to-woman talk with her on the importance of video games for adults. (besides, we didnt have PCs when we were growing up--that is MY excuse! i have some catching up to do...)

i have black and white...looks beautiful on the new iMac...how do you check the frame rates?? let me know and i'll test it....g

ps black and white won't load at 1024...asks you to default down to 800x600...still looks lovely though....but would love to see it at max res...g

To do that, I'd have to 1) explain to her the utility of an apple message board, and 2) show her how to use it. Mrs Thoth is very intelligent, but really doesn't like to use computers for anything other than e-mail. Of course, as I was making an iMovie about Christmas, she oooh'ed and ahhh'ed over how cool Macs are. She hates PC's.

MY excuse goes along the lines of "if you add up all the movies we rent and magazines we buy in a month you'd more than surpass the $$'s on a single game that would last me many many months (I've run through Diablo II 3x's in about 6 months, for instance.)

    g-

I don't know how to look at frame rates for B&W. Anybody? "Beautiful" is enough for me to buy it though.

cool...B&W is nothing like a first person shooter though, so the action is never hot and heavy...nothing to bog down the machine much (except the very nice graphics...lots of beautiful little touches that keep one coming back for more....except those annoying sailors and their singing...you should have your creature eat them as quickly as possible...or throw them out to sea without their boat)...have fun....my misses is alot like yours...happy that i make movies and help the kids with the computer...but she really is somewhat anti-technology herself....she uses the computer only when forced, and has no understanding of the need for computer games....happy to see mac's girl is a FPS type...would have never thought that by seeing her lovely light wood floors and pristine white furniture if you like the sims, but wish they would eat each other once and awhile or had a digipet a few years ago...you will like B&W...some do and some don't....some see it has just slapping your creature for pooping in the wrong place...(as if that's a bad thing :o )...take care and good luck...g

my next game is going to be Giants...but should wait awhile as we just bought B&W, Civ3, STV: elite force and a couple of sims expansion packs...we are not big gamers and this should last us for some time....g

Please forgive the off topic nature of this, but when I saw the pictures of her iMac box next to the white chair I thought it WAS GIGANTIC. It looked so out of scale. So, I went to pick up the computer (because I would miss fed ex) and I borrowed my buddies' car thinking it wouldn't fit in my Miata. The fed ex guy saw my shocked look at the small size of the box and said "what's the matter? I didn't drop it."

    Anyway...

thanks for the review and its good to know I'm not the only adult that likes to play like a kid (I'm telling ya, OttoMattic is addictive).

I, too, am going to get B&W, Giants, and RTcW (eventually).

hey hey hey! i was surprised at the small size of the box when i got it too. (didnt make it any lighter for me, though, hehe.) however, i still think its the size of half a chair. that chair isnt as huge as you might have thought. not like a big clunky recliner or anything. i guess mod/ contemporary pieces are smaller and sleeker in design. so, i apologize if it gave an incorrect size perspective.

finally DL'ed the multi-player demo of return to castle wolfenstein. the graphics are just beautiful and there is no lag in the gameplay. i wish they had a single player demo for mac, but i am impressed enough to buy the game.

once i figure out how to get the frame rates, i'll post them. it's gotta be good though.

p.s. yes, not all girls play barbie games!!!! hahahahaha!

it needs voodoo glide to make the performance better, Some PC users are trying to buy the old Voodoo4 or Voodoo5 graphic card for that game.

BTW, i got 25-50 fps in Cube/MacOS 9.2.2, the performance is better when I am in Battle.net.

i havent touched diablo2 again since the lackluster performance on my new imacG4. i still say it worked better with a 2mb ati rage than with the nvidia geF2. what kind of card is in the cube?

Framerate counter for RTcW is (I believe) to type cg_drawfps 1 (maybe cg_showfps 1) in the console. I think you activate the console by hitting the tilde key.

Thats how I remember doing it with the test versions a few months ago.

Not sure about Black & White.

I would really love ot see some info (fps) for RtCW if you get the chance, Macsgirl - maybe try it at a couple of different resolutions/configs.

That is one piece of info I have not been able to find anywhere on the net.

To show Frames Per Second in Return to Castle Wolfenstein do the following once inside of a game.

    1. Bring down the console by hitting the tilde '~' key.

    2. Type '/toggle cg_drawfps' without the quotes.

    3. Hit tilde '~' again to remove the console. The FPS counter should be in the top right.

For reference my B&W G3 450, 256RAM, 2001 Radeon 32MB DDR gets between 20-50 FPS outside, and between 50-80 FPS inside with default display settings @ 1024x768.
