you can run X on a Bondi. I did, and still do, except it has a 433 G4 in it now . It will just be a little slow thats all. Give it all the ram you can and download shadowkill freeware from version tracker. That should help speed things up. also, set monitor to thousands, use scale effect instead of genie.

just stick with 8.6 or 9 on it and be happy. OS X isn't worth the troubles on it unless the only thing you ever plan to do with it is e-mail and web browsing
I run OS 10.1.2 on a Bondi iMac. It works fine, except for anything that would access graphics acceleration. Apple and ATI have not yet released drivers for the Rage Pro chip these iMacs, the Wall Street PowerBooks, and Beige G3 minitowers use. You'll notice that the genie effect is pretty slow, and that QuickTime playback sucks almost all the time.
Otherwise, it's very solid, especially with lots of RAM. If you mainly use the computer to run internet apps, AppleWorks, and shareware programs, you'll be set. The Adobe apps I've tried (like Illustrator 10) and Office v. X are pretty pokey. Program launch speed is acceptable, and I/O operations like internet downloads will nearly double those (for the better) you see in OS 9.

i put a 433mhz G4 in mine. although, these are kinda hard to find now days. sonnet is selling a 500mhz G3 for 299.00 and it gives you a firewire port. pretty neat. but personally, id rather have the G4 and Altivec. (and video card drivers )
when AppleWorks 6 first came out it was a disaster on my ibook. Launch then crash. Ok, increase its memory. Launch again, crash. Ok, restart. Launch again, crash.
In 9, all it takes is one app to bring everything down.....

OS 9 does not crash on me. If it is constantly crashing on you it is YOUR fault.
iMac should not require many additional drivers so stability will be even better.
OS 9 runs a hell of a lot better and actually supports the imac unlike OS X.
