I am seriously thinking of getting a G4 867 with a SD ( I can get one for a decent price)

and was wondering if you guys could enlighten me with some user comments...



Is it fast enough ?



Do you like it ?



Should I go for it ?



Is the SD any good ?

If you're just going to use it as a "home" machine for surfing the web, using office-type apps, and playing some games, it should work great for you. If you're going to use it for pro stuff like video editing or 3d rendering, I'd strongly recommend going for a newer Mac.

    mmm ,

    I'm going to use it for all that home stuff plus some Dev work and some Music/Audio .... maybe even some 3D stuff.... ( wanted to get into this ages ago and thought it would be nice to do a bit of it with the new machine )



    As for the newer boxen , from the B.Marks i'm seeing the 933 is only marginaly faster ( and much more pricy ) and the Ghz x 2 is way out of my budget range......



    I'm interested to know which machine would you recomend intead of this one ?



    Also, any peoeple who own an 867 - your feedback would be much appriciated !

    Bah! Go for it!



    The only reason I mentioned 3d and video is that you'll ALWAYS want a faster machine in those two fields of work. Thus, it's usually good to get the best from the start.

    As for 3D....Mac is 'okay' when you are only using it for modeling and building scene. When comes to rendering you better assign those jobs to couple of very cheap Athlon PCs.



    To answer your first question: Is it fast enough?



    I will say, maybe



    On 2D stuff.... when compare it with my Dual 500 it's faster in Photoshop and other illustration apps....but when come to rendering in AE and Cinema 4D and sorenson video compression my Dual 500 still beats it ....



    For 3D.....look again on what I just said



    Oh....when you are really going into 3D. Make sure to look for the app that allows cross platform installation (or with the cross platform rendering engine at least)

    Snag a Dual 800 if you can. Much better investment in the long run.
