I have 1.5 GB in my quad and ususally when it's idle and nothing open it uses about 512 MB of ram. It blows away my PowerBook at everything and I don't see why yours shouldn't you iMac. Then again I do stuff that is more processor intensive than ram intensive which is why I only went with an additional GB. I will say that the G5 doesn't seem much quicker than the PowerBook in typical everyday tasks but once you start doing something that needs raw horsepower you will notice a huge difference.
