I would think that a fork would have happened 'til now. Are there plans for a fork?
No*. The general consensus seems to be that a fork would not be worth it, as the quality of the code simply isn't good enough. In the long run, therefore, a wholly new software project should hopefully be launched.
*) Well, there was the Gaim-vv fork for implementing voice and video, but part of Gaim 2.0 is to merge that back in. It was always intended to be a temporary, "friendly" fork, more of an external branch, really.
I know most of these options can be found at Pimpmysafari.com (although, some you have to pay for) but they should come standard with Safari. I really don't understand why they don't.
-option to have warning pop up to ask if you're sure you want to exit Safari if you have tabs open
-Moveable tabs
-Full screen browsing
-History search
-Some sort of tab saver (so if you need to close Safari or restart your coputer, yo don't lose your tabs
-Bigger bookmarks bar
-Change Google search bar to search other sites than google (much like Firefox's ability to search dictionary.com Wikipedia)
I'm sure there are others but I can't think of them right now. If these were added, I think Safari would be perfect!
I know the thread's moved beyond this first post, but I wanted to mention that Saft (not free, but not expensive) adds ALL of these features and more. Try it.

Firefox is a decent browser on Windows, but certainly not on Mac OS. There's far too many good alternatives to Safari (Shiira, Camino, OmniWeb) as to even consider Firefox.

Some of us (i.e. me) just like Safari better.
I know that, but these are things that I think Apple whould put into the browser as options for everyone.
This is good, and Opera had this...since, well, since forever (almost). Firefox has this too, by adding the SessionSaver extension.
Ah. I didn't know this. I have only used Firefox and Safari.

But I don't like it. It re-renders every page every single time you start your browser, plus it renders your browser useless until it re-renders all those pages.
A simple (nagging) dialog is much better than this. IMHO, of course. To each his own.
Those are not mutually exclusive options. Other things remaining the same, I believe continous browsing over app quit/startup is a clearly superior UI choice. You just don't like that fixing it brings out a different problem: unresponsiveness. There is no reason why the browser couldn't render from cache first, render the frontmost page first, and keep its controls responsive during background tasks like rendering other pages.

I would say that Firefox is the browser on Windows and it's a great browser on Mac OS.
Safari may have a better UI and feel more 'Mac-like' but Firefox has speed and expandability.
After the last Safari update, it now rendeers better that anything else. Go to webstandards.org and takt the acid test. Before the last update, Safari sucked at this, now it is perfect.
Also, did anyone mention a good way to alphabetize bookmarks? I don't want a bunch of crap I won't use, just order.

Yes. He (Sean) was hired by Google to work, essentially, on implementing Google Talk in Gaim.
There's quite a bit of disagreements over that, however.

Maybe Adium could use that...
See ya!
