Wiki has an interesting historical read at Mac OS X, briefly;
10.0 Cheetah (internal name) 03/24/2001 (date of release)
10.1 Puma (internal name) 09/25/2001 (date of release)
10.2 Jaguar (release name) 08/24/2002 (date of release)
10.3 Panther (release name) 10/24/2003 (date of release)
10.4 Tiger (release name) 04/29/2005 (date of release)
10.5 Leopard (announced name) 06/06/2005 (date of announcement)
10.6 Lynx or Cougar (USPTO) TBD
The USPTO lists Leopard (07/02/2003), Lynx (07/08/2003), Cougar (07/08/2005), Panther (07/12/2003), and Tiger (07/12/2003) as the only "Cats" that "Apple Computer" has as trademark applications. As you can see all these applications were submitted in July, 2003, just prior to the release of Panther (so the whole official public cat naming thing had to be determined prior to July 2003). Also note that while Jaguar was an actual release name, I doubt that Apple would have tried to ? or ® this given the British car manufacturer's existing ?'s and ®'s (there are many), notwithstanding the completely different areas these products would have been marketed in. Also, Panther is the only ® to date, the rest have a "Notice of Publication" (it took Panther about 3.5 months to get an ® from a similar status point), Leopard, Lynx, and Cougar all have ITU Extension Approval (basically a 6-month place holder which has to be updated every 6-months).
Based on this information it would have to be either Lynx or Cougar for 10.6!
I would suggest renaming Bobcat to Lynx, keeping Cougar, and eliminating the other two (until such time that Apple applies for additional cat names at USPTO)?
Being from Vermont (and a UVM alum), I'll choose Catamount (AKA Cougar (or Panther, Mountain Lion, Puma, depending who you talk to)).
They are going straight to OS 11. It will be named after bears (ie. 1st: Polar, 2nd Grizzly, 3rd Kodiak, 4th Sloth and 5th Sun) which will use a linux kernel

MS would love that! E-or may be a little moody and temperamental for me.
Although I will not encourage people to design the box art for that!
