Hey,

I have returned home after being a way from my Mac for a year, and was about to upgrade to Tiger... but should I wait until after Macworld? Will iLife 06 come standard with all copies of Tiger bought after the release of iLife 06? Obviously I don't want to buy Tiger now, and then iLife 06 next week if it means that they will come together in a few weeks time anyway.

Tiger and iLife are completely separate products. iLife 05 is not included with Tiger, so why would iLife 06?

No. You get a free copy of the current iLife with the purchase of a new computer, not an OS.

but iLife is part of the OS... so shouldn't all new copies of Tiger come with the latest versions of iLife?

iLife is not now a part of the OS, rather it is a part of the mac experience. Therefore, although every mac has iLife, Mac OS X does not include iLife.

I hate to break it to you, but it's been that way for a while! I sure as hell didn't get ilife when I plunked down the money for panther.

No differant than the windows world, back in the day I had a Win 95 PC that had Works and Word on it, when I blew away the drive and installed 98, i didnt have them any more till I reinstalled the apps from media (of cource in those days we got acctual backup media for every app that shipped on the PC and not a damn image...aaa for the good ole days...), it was included with the computer, not the OS

So... at the end of the day... there is no point in waiting until after Macworld before buying a copy of Tiger?

No, unless you plan to buy a new machine. The retail Tiger package will have the basic iLife functionality and most certainly not the latest version.

No, but if you buy both iLife '06 and Tiger, you're a third of the way to a new Core Duo Mac Mini with remote, Front Row 2, and built-in iPod dock!

I think there is a very good reason to wait until after MacWorld. If Intel powered Macs require 10.4.4 then waiting for 10.4.4 to be in retail boxes will be in your best interest because:

    1) it will install on your current Mac

    2) it will install on Intel Macs (used Mac with no OS).

    3) if your first Intel Mac comes with Leopard you will be able to install your Tiger on another hard drive/partition that you can boot to until you no longer need access to it.

    4) you can have your OS, apps, and files on an external drive and use someone else's computer and not have to worry if it is PPC or Intel powered.

The problem is that waiting the retail boxes with 10.4.4 could be a long wait. I don't know for the U.S., but in Europe this can be months or never.
