<strong>I've seen those. They're pretty damn big, and there's really no good reason to have onboard MP3 encoding, when my PBG4 can do it at 6-7x. (also, where are you going to get the source material?)

Anywhere. Radio, stereo, mic, anything. the iPod needs a line in. all they have to do is have a frewire- line in adapter

he has an older rev 2 Jukebox. 3 adds a hell of a lot more and makes buying an iPod for the same price a lot more difficult decision.
but now it has Firewire AND USB, realtime mp3 or wav recording and a slightly better interface.
also, a remote with FM radio and Mic is "coming soon".
The advantage of the 'Pod used to be firewire, but now this player has FW, but also USB for use with older computers as well (great for transferring data).
People are saying "blah, blah, you don't need this, you don't need that". Well the truth is, I do a considerable amount of tape recording or external audio for multimedia projects, and would like to do more, especially digitally. You use realtime MP3 encoding to say record a lecture straight to MP3 (because a .wav file would be huge.) Also, I like to listen to my radio a lot at work, and being able to record some of my favorite broadcasts would be a really cool feature.
So don't tell me what I do and do not need.... If I didn't know better I'd think you worked at Radioshack..... next thing you'll be saying that I don't need AltiVec.

i think that that nomad jukebox 3 looks really good at a good price, but for most people, ipod does enough.....if this would have been out before the ipod came out, then i probably would have thought twice, but still have bought the ipod....
there are people who do need those extra features that the nomad has, but i'm not sure of the size of the market. i'm guessing there isn't a 125,000 person market for mp3 encoding....radio would be a nice feature, but it probably won't make or break too many people's decisions....who knows....this is only my guesses....
i'm guessing this summer or fall, there'll be a more comprehensive revision of the ipod, possibly adding some of the features in the nomad...only time will tell
Recording with a microphone is not that easy unless you can get the microphone up close to the speaker. Otherwise you get a lot of echoes and other room noise. It is useful for a student to capture a lecture with a mic at their desk but probably not something you would give anyone.
I think it would be cool if iPod could record and had a radio tuner but it is not hurting sales much. I'll bet that if they had a built in mic and record function it would only sway a small percentage of sales.
Powerbooks can already record from the built-in mic. Raise your hands everyone who records meetings and such with this.
(although I think the topic title's a little bit inflammatory!).
Anyone who says "you can just record on your iBook!" is really missing the point... iPod is a great consumer device - I love mine - BUT, to better target professional musicians, this kind of functionality is a huge benefit. Currently the format of choice amongst a lot of musicians I know is minidisc, but space is limited (and you have cumbersome discs!).
People have been calling for recording functionality on the iPod since day one and it's about time iPod got a mic.

Bottomline: what Apple put into it was just right and more than makes up for what they may (or may not) have left out.
they'll add it eventually and will probably only win over a few thousand people....it's not a make or break deal for most people.....for most, it's icing on the cake.....it's not a feature that will get them another 125,000 sales, so they probably aren't working on that as hard as they're working on making other features or digital devices.....i hope they're working on an ipod for windows machines more because that would cause demand to jump again. that's the main untapped market they should focus on, not musicians who own a mac who want to record to their ipods.
they'll add it eventually....just wait

Of course, as far as I'm concerned, that's a great reason to do it. <img src="graemlins/lol.gif" border="0" alt="[Laughing]" />
But other people would want a mic and line in and don´t care if it was a little larger.
Other again want a screen and AVI decoder so they could watch ST on the train.
Other again would want a build in FM radio transmitter so they could use it with their car stereo.
Again others wants it to include Bluetooth and wireless headphones.
And finally there are those who would want it to be with orange and green disco lights, alcohol-meter and oral multilanguage translator.
What I am trying to say is all of the above with the exception of the last example is real wants here on the boards. Apple has to make a compromise and they made a perfect one with the current iPod (with the exception of the price)
But now this is sorta going into future hardware territory.
