    Buy it.

I wouldn't waste the next 2 months waiting for 10.2. 10.1.4 right now will be perfectly fine on either of the new PowerBooks.

I'm sure we won't see anything happen to the Ti Books in 2 months either - that seems too quick to me. (MWNY)

Of course as usual, if you don't need it, wait, and blah blah blah. I'd say it's a great time to get a PowerBook right now if you're in the market for one. The new 667s are faster, cooler, quieter, have a better screen and resolution, DVI out, L3 cache... jesus I'm getting a hard one here.

Just buy it. You'll love it.

In case anyone cares, I ran the Skidmarks GT processor benchmark from the one developer tools additions thing on my new 667 (DVI), and got the following results:

Skidmarks GT - Processor Performance Benchmark

    (c) 2002 Apple Computer, Inc.

Note: Power Mac G4/400 (PCI Graphics) = 1000 for all tests.

    Gathering system information...

    Starting performance tests...

    Integer: 2024

    Floating Point: 1417

    Vector: 1752

    Skidmarks completed succesfully.

Needless to say, I was impressed because my iMac DV 400 got around 900 for both integer and floating point calculations.

Also, I got about 2.4 gigaflops on Altivec Fractal Carbon, definitely better than the 240 megaflops on the above mentioned iMac.

Does anyone know of a utility to check the processor model under OS X? PPC Checker obviously doesn't run under classic, and I would hate to boot into 9 just to run that.

As a final word, if you're thinking about buying a TiBook, now is a GREAT time to do so. I absolutely love this machine. It's great to finally be able to play games at a resolution higher than 640x480! Every aspect of this computer, from the monitor to the processor to the overall feel is significantly better than my iMac, as it should be (except for the internal speakers, but I have Soundsticks for that )

Man, and I just booted into 9 to check. Here's what it said anyway:

    PowerPC Unknown

    PVR= 0x80010201

That's the same number above, so I guess it is a 7455 (but then again, I always thought it was a 7455)

Thanks for the report on the CPU being a 7455. That's great news.

Motorola lists the speeds for the 7455 as 600, 733, 800, 933, &1 GHz. As Eugene Chan suspected, they must have up or down-clocked it to fit Apple's specs.

Well guys. All I can say is that my 800 is a beast!! And it runs soooo much cooler than the previous 667. It is warm to the touch underneath (being on for 6 hours straight from power) but your eggs wont cook through!!

Screen res is better...nothing overly major....but still sharper just the same.

Funny thing though, I was borrowing a Ti 400 and was running UT Pr3 on OSX but it wont play on my 800 (so as to see the Radeon performance)....though the Visual on iTunes doesn't go full screen, as in, to the edges of the screen....maybe a few adjustments need to be made in the next version to accomodate the higher screen res.

Overall though, a great improvement to the 667 which was an electric blanket!

Oh, and I didn't hear the fan come on once while the thing was on!! Sweeeeet!

Glad to be of service. My guess would be downclocked 733 (would seem safer in terms of heat, etc). So then, I guess I should go warm up my soldering iron...

Hmm, then that's not the source of additional cooling. It's probably just the heat-'patch,' the 7455, and taller feet then. How many fans are in your 667MHz TiBook? I know the new ones have two.

Hmmm....the feet don't look any taller on the new PB's as they are on the 1st gen Ti's. I got both side by side and I don't see any difference....even when I turn them over!!

Mind you....my 800 has 2 DEAD FREAKIN' PIXELS!!!!!

And there's nothing I can do!!

Is there any idea of the airport reception on these new TiBook models? I just ordered one and am eagerly awaiting getting it. One thing I noticed with the elder 667s is that they will cut off the 802.11 network very easily. I could be sitting in my dorm with the WAP no more than 20 ft down the hall, and I won't get any more than a 2/5 signal. I'm really hoping my new 800 fares better than the 667 rev B did.

Try briskly tapping on the affected areas. I've had several bouts with dead pixels on my PB2400's aging screen (which, to my dismay, doesn't count as a pismo either ), and that's resolved all but two of them. You just need to not be squeamish about breaking the LCD. Unless you try to be hercules about it, you won't.

I read that somewhere that the 800 has dual fans but the 667 has just the one. Is anyone out there got into their 667dvi yet? Mine (667 DVD) has one fan which seems to run infrequently btw.

Hmm...good question... I would be interested to hear about this also... Anyone capable of making a comparison and reporting back?

The old Ti's have terrible reception when compared to other models. My friend who has a penchant for dismantling form factors and using apple laptops as a collection of connected parts noticed his airport reception almost quadruple once he freed the antenna plates from their titanium housing.

Ti may look pretty but it also seems to do a great job blocking electomagnetic communications as well! I am curious if the engineers did anything to address this! (that is, if anything can indeed be done)

Yeah, one intake fan at the back of the machine and an exhaust at the vents on the left.

I've been seriously considering the 667, and I have two questions for you about gaming:

    1. Is there the rumored black bar across the top of the screen when you're playing? If so, has anyone found a way to fix this?

    2. Have you had the fan come on at all? If so, how loud was it?

    Thanks.

An interesting thing about my new 800 MHz TiBook... I can now run with the lid closed again.

I used to run my 667 that way... external monitor and keyboard plugged in, lid closed. Then when OS 10.1.3 came around, I suddenly couldn't do that anymore. On another discussion board someone had said this was the result of a deliberate change in the OS, to prevent the TiBook from getting to get too hot. I often found the inner surface to be quite toasty after running with the lid closed (especially the power button!), so this explanation seems plausible to me.

What I'm wondering now is this: Is the heat dispersal of the new 800 now deemed good enough that it's safe to run with the lid closed again? Or is it merely an oversight, and I should play it safe an keep my TiBook wide open when running?

I certainly don't need the extra screen real estate. A major reason for upgrading to the 800 was to get the DVI port and to plug in a 22" Cinema Display. With the way my TiBook is situated next to this larger display, using both screens together isn't very useful most of the time, and I still run into apps (like the latest build of Mozilla) that can get a bit confused in two-display environments.

    1. No, only black bars on the sides.

    2. I think the fan might have come on, but I'm not sure (which means that during most of my use, the Tibook has been quieter than both my mini-fridge and my roommates fanless iMac)
