People did complain, and that's an understatement. You're memory seems selective.

I don't remember it either. EmAn, I'm with you... Good point.

Recently there's been "resolution inflation" brought on by OS X. OS X is "larger" in pixels than any of the previous operating systems, so a higher resolution in the screen is compensated for by the higher resolution of the graphics and OS in general. But back when the Pismo was released, OS X was not widespread at all, so I don't see why people would complain about the resolution. 1024x768 on a 14" screen is perfect for OS 9, which is why it was set to that.

I don't think people complained that the really old 17" monitors had 800x600 resolution. That was just standard back then.

Yeah, but the "resolution inflation" of OS X (as you call it), is only really in the menubar on the top of the screen. Almost every other screen element (within individual applications) is no bigger than in OS 9. 1024x768 really isn't that bad under OS X (that's what I ran my old iMac at). Although I've come to recognize that 1280x854 is the optimal resolution

There's a similar note at ibook.com directing you to <a href="http://www.apple.com/ibook."; target="_blank">www.apple.com/ibook. Methinks there was some lawyering over the use of the term "iBook". I assume the other folks had it first, otherwise Apple would have crushed them out of existence.

well, I must say that I don't feel this update a compelling reason (from what we have seen so far) to sell off my iBook 14 and get the new one. I think I'll still aim for the TiBook.

BTW, where in the heck do you see a resolution upgrade on the 14inch??? They are all still at XGA 1024x768 resolution...

From the Family Systems site FAQ:

[quote]I thought the "iBook" was owned by Apple. Aren't you violating their trademark?

ibook® is a registered trademark of Family Systems Ltd.Â* Family Systems Ltd. has a joint use agreement with Apple Computer Inc. for the use of the term "ibook."Â* Family Systems may use the term in conjunction with hardware and software systems related to our patented interactive web based books and Apple may use the term in conjunction with notebook computers and related hardware and peripherals. Can we say 'Mac Classic?'

Wonder how much they were paid...

Well, you guys who aren't actually in the market for a new laptop can bitch and moan all you want, but I think I'm ready to buy. I am the target market (college student)! Woohoo!

Seriously, 100 MHz FSB, 700 MHz Sahara, Combo Drive, for $1,449? For another $136 I can bring the RAM up to 640 MB. Don't forget that it also now has S-video and composite out, and at 4.9 pounds with a polycarbonate shell, this will be perfect for stuffing in my backpack.

I think this will be fine for running Sibelius 2, BIAS Deck 3.5, and Office v. X under OS X, especially considering I run those programs now under 9 on my little iMac 333 with 320 MB of RAM and she plugs away fine. That's what I need a computer for, and a PC really can't do the job as well as a Mac.

    Apple Store:

    $1449*8% tax+$1449+$136=&1700.92

    Mail Order:

$1499+$136=$1635+Free extras that mail order places throw in.

The EDU pricing at the Apple store IS REDICULOUS with tax... I wish I could move to NH....

that being said, if I wasn't so sick of having a small screen I would get the iBook in a heartbeat. Right now I am torn between the 667 TiBook and the $1499 iBook....

Does BC have a computer store? If they do, you'll probably be able to get institutional pricing on personal purchases (read: larger discounts) and you'll only pay 5% MA sales tax, perhaps none if you can convince them to ship to NY.

I am wondering what OS X performance is like on the new iBook 700 as I am thinking about getting one. The PBG4 800 is a little expensive, especially compared with the 667 model so im a little wary of shelling out $3K for the 800 version. Does the 667 use the same chip with the ful L3 DDR cache? I was thinking I could pretty easily clock the 667 up to 800 or perhaps even higher, however the new Sahara might do 800-900. I wouldnt really want the 14" iBook as it seems a lot heavier/bulkier, so Im wondering if I'll be able to get used to the 12". I do work with 3D apps as well as Cubase etc. Hmm...

Eugene, does the new iBook come with 10.1.5?

Comes with PC133 RAM. Anyone gonna overclock this thing to a 133 bus?

Waiting till August = Good idea.

Thing is the new Sahara G3 can run on 200 MHz bus. So if the damn Powerbook G4s werent limited to that 133 Mhz bus, the iBook would have a 200 MHz bus. I wonder if since these new G3s support a 200 bus speed, there is a trick to get it to 200?

Why would waiting until August be a good idea? Because they'd be widely available on the used market for cheap by then? I don't think they'd get two updates in three months, especially after going about six without any updates (unless Apple just wanted to get some more iBook sales until the next revision is ready). And I don't think there would be a mass selloff of 700 MHz iBooks after the new PowerMacs at MWNY, because the two computers are totally different.

Of course, I can get by fine with my current computer, and it'd probably be best if I waited until August anyway.
