one more question:

when the airport base station is idle, i mean not downloading or uploading, i notice from the cable modem that, sth is being uploaded and downloaded at a regular pattern, (i have netmonitor installed, so i can see that pattern)

this didnt happen when the modem was connected to the iMac,

    so , is this normal?

    You are lucky.

I have airport in my house but tis range is about 5 metres. I didn't think the solid concrete walls of my apartment will make such a big difference... oh well.

Please... can anyone upload via FTP using Airport?! I can't get it to work on two different computers. I believe I have to setup the particular IP for Port Mapping to use FTP, but I have no idea what the numbers are for the public and private ports. Then again, I have no idea if this will even work.

    1) My wireless base station is hooked up to our home network of 8 computers. The B-station pings all computers on the network to update some database it uses to do-it's-thing. It does not effect performance or your cable modem. It just blinks lights. Best to ignore it.

    2) In the 5-10 minutes it took to type this, my firewall recorded 8 hacking attempts. 128 bit encryption only stops other computers from understanding your wireless packets. It will not stop someone on the internet from hacking into your computer. (sorry if you already know this) This site may help: <a href="http://www.securemac.com/"; target="_blank">Secure Mac

    3) Sorry, Mr. Fantastic. Looked into the problem, but still can't help. (I have an airport card in my laptop, but I connect to a Nokia basestation)

First, I don't actually have an Airport basestation. I have a Nokia A0202 that was given to me free, so I use it. I Checked the apple website and sure enough, Airport has a built in firewall. (It looks pretty simple though.) I typed the rest before checking the website but here it is anyway. The only software that will configure the basestation is the apple airport utilities. Well, unless it is web-based, but I doubt that.

Second, there are 2 kinds of firewalls, Hardware and software. Most people have strong opinions about which is better, so I will try to stay neutral. I have a hardware firewall that is between the basestation and the cable modem. Software firewalls (like Norton Firewall) are obviously on the computer. The airport basestation probably uses NAT (Network Address Translation) like most hardware firewalls. The "Port Mapping" feature allows you to set up a web server on one of your computers and redirect computers to it.

Imagine you had a web server with an IP address of 10.0.0.14, and your base station was 10.0.0.1, you could activate port mapping and set port 80 (Web) to 10.0.0.14:80 (that's the web server you created, and ":80" is the port). Now all the traffic that tries to access your web page would log on to 10.0.0.1:80 (basestation) and get redirected to 10.0.0.14 (webserver). You could also set up a FTP server the same way with port 21, and quake servers, but I don't know the port for that.

    ------

My opinion is as follows: I like Asante's FR3004 series routers, and I don't like Norton [anything] because I get screwed on Anti-virus subscription.

    Edit- added more smilies

Works fine for me. On the Airport end, that is. I'm working off a cable modem connection that has a 16KB/ps upload restriction, real world uploading via FTP is 6-8KB/ps, @Home sux0rz

No bad words on Airport though, got both my MP G4 and iBook hooked up, I'm posting this on my 14" iBook from my backyard, as we speak.

Advice: place your base station strategically in the middle of your home (or just throw it out the window if you want to work outside )
