I thought the <a href="http://www.apple.com/xserve/"; target="_blank">Xserve took care of that

    Mac OS X Server software

    Dual 1-GHz PowerPC G4

    256K L2 cache & 2MB L3 cache

    512MB SDRAM memory (PC-133)

    80GB Ultra ATA drive @ 7200 rpm

Cheaper than the XServe with Dual G4 and if you don't need a 1u rig and are happy with the performance, go for it. If not, don't

    Why?

    1. Not everybody has a rack to put an xServe into.

    2. Clearing out inventory

And have you seen the prices on those racks, damn!

*still dreams of TiBook with portable FW RAID tower and external PCI chassis - also wonders how much battery life a PB would have with a rig like that... *

    2. Clearing out inventory

I dooubt Apple will get rid of the PM Server product line. It's likely to just get upgraded with the features and enclosure of the PM's, except tailored for the needs of network serving and NetBooting, coming with OS X Server and all. There will always be a market for the PM form factor servers, I believe, as you'll be be paying premium for fitting a Mac server in a 1U space - which incidentally is completely iimpractical for the average LAN admin, who won't need to stack several servers.

I'd guess they are clearing out inventory, because there isn't much the PowerMac Server can do that you can't do with a regular PowerMac if you have the time to download and install the extra software like MySQL and PHP4.

1.) Server with an unlimited license comes with them. 1000 dollar value.

2.) redudant power supplies which even the Xserve doesn't have

3.) in the past they have come with a 4 port 10/100 Ethernet card. not sure if this is true with the latest ones.

so there are differences, not major but big enough to matter.

Redundant power supply? The PowerMac Server has the same power supply as the PowerMac. It IS a PowerMac, preloaded with OS X Server, and thats ALL it is. The production costs to make these makes consist of the time it takes the web developer to make the page at the Apple Store. Thats it. So even if a few people buy them, they are worth the money to keep in the lineup. If I wanna start up my own small business, and need a good server, I'm sure as hell not goona buy a whole rack just to buy an Xserver (though it would be DAMN COOL) I'm goona buy a desktop adn load X on to it. Hey look thats what these are.

they had redundant power supplies since the first G4 server tower. apparantly they removed that with the last update because it's no longer mentioned. I guess it went out with the 4 port 10/100 ethernet card

My guess is that Apple won't find the small sales to be enough to justify another mac product line and will eventually drop the server and maybe have an OS choice box for PowerMacs OSX or OSX server.

Of course, that's just a guess, but it would make sense since it seems to be where they're headed.

I remember earlier ones had more things like the 4 port ethernet, but I thought they stopped that.

I'm with l008com. I don't remember hearing about redundant power supplies in any G3/G4 Mac.

Xserve doesn't run on OS 9 right? Doesn't seem to anyway ... if not then some clients may want the old server that can run OS 9 (for whatever reason). That said I really don't see any reason not to do what's already suggested & just make OS X Server a BTO option on the regular PM.

Why should they do away with the old server? They haven't done away with the old iMac. They'll sell them to anyone stup... Oh, never mind.

They may just be selling off old stock... or making them for schools and other institutions that request them. they should stop the old iMacs, maybe at the end of the educational buying season this year and just work on improving and price dropping the eMacs by a couple hundred before the next edu buying season.

iMacs are cheap and still sell though. also have a very small footprint.

eMac's may get cheaper but even then the imac CRT will just get even cheaper

they sold like 148,000 last quarter I think. At that time they were the only desktop option for education from apple but now with the eMac it will be interesting to see how sales do.
