Naaa. Just buy one and unplug the fans. And for liquid-cooled, just dunk into a bathtub or neighbors pool.

(Sorry, I couldn't let this one get away...)

i think the new iMac is nearly silent. The eMac made a lot of noise (see another topic). The Quicksilver 2001/2002 are TOO noisy (airplane / Hoover) !!!

If you want a good and quiet tower: search a dual 533 on ebay (very rare).

If you want the superdrive and silence go for the new iMac

    Hope this help

Definitely the G4 Cube. I never had one myself. In fact, I'm thinking about trying to find one somewhere on eBay, and simply removing the monitor and using an AirPort to make a nice server / side table ornament out of it.

The Cube and iMacs are the quietest computers I've seen.

All iMacs before the LCD iMac that had a 100mhz bus were fanless and of course almost silent. This means any CRT iMac other than the 233mhz, 266mhz and 333mhz versions.

I believe these macs are quieter than some cubes because i think the cubes that used Radeons had a fan on the graphics card (i could be wrong)

Yeah, that's correct. Those were kinda noisy compared to the ones with Rage128s.

While the fanless design minimizes noise, there's a fairly audible hum from the CRT. Because of this, my new powerbook is actually quieter than my iMac DV (when the fan is off of course)

You can get a Big Mac at MacDonalds. it's as quiet as you want it to be. Depends on your eating habits.

Macworld, soundproofing for the inside of every powermac.

IMHO the quicksilver's noise is a big oversight. Perhaps Apple will listen to complaints and avoid overly ambitious speed increases to keep temps down.

So um yeah, get an iAnything over the QS towers... or wait a month and see what happens

The Macintosh 128k, 512k, and Plus had no fan also. They're probably pretty quiet, except that they didn't have hard drives and floppy drives tend to be kinda noisy. But still, they're probably a lot quieter than a new Power Mac.

My 'slot-loading' G3 iMac became exceptionally quiet when I replaced the wailing banshee of a hard disk with a Seagate Barracuda IV. Apart from a faint clicking when accessing the disk, it's nearly inaudible.

(Hmm...I must also be one of the lucky CRT owners whose monitor doesn't thrum or crackle; mine makes a discreet 'click' when turned on/off - nothing more.)

Mind you, almost any off-the-shelf PC can be made significantly quieter if you're willing to purchase replacement fans/HDs. It's a bother, but what can you do? Most companies are cheap when it comes to these things...

    i got one for peanuts!

runs os 10.1.5 just fine, silent as a stone, looks great, sounds great (the speakers) and is fun not having the hole desk full of computer-stuff.

Are you kidding me? You would rather have the fan noise lowered by 15-20db than have screaming fast speeds? What a joke! What Apple needs is to forget about the fan noise and get some faster everything!

i agre. while having a quieter computer is nice, the PowerMacs are made for power, hence: speed.
