Safari Woes - high CPU % and beachballing

In the course of normal use, Safari seems to really be getting bogged down. Today, it will regularly use about 15-20% CPU in the background, and when i start surfing it'll beachball and hit about 75%, then come back down to normal. A half hour or so later, it'll repeat this.



Yesterday, safari refused to move past the 'contacting' stage of loading a websit until i quit it, even though firefox worked just fine.



any suggestions??

    Yeah, some computers don't work well with Safari.



    I have a dual 2.5ghz G5 and it was doing the same thing with 2.5 gigs of RAM.. totally mindboggling..

    Have you checked your update releases?



    I've just switched from Windows and Safari is far better than IE, so I'm happy with it for now , Lets hope Apple improves it even more with the release of Leopard.

    I'm pretty sure it's to do with what websites you visit. I've seen some sites make Firefox use 50%+ CPU and Safari handles them ok and some that work ok in FF but hang up Safari.



    I personally prefer Safari but it's the web developers that are to blame. If they followed strict W3C compliance then things would be a bit better. But then again, they'd still bog them down with flash adverts.



    More often than not, you'll find that the flash plugin is to blame for high CPU usage. I got so fed up once I uninstalled it and my CPU usage cut dramatically. Flash ads get replaced with animated gifs.



    Also, don't use the flash 8 plugin. Although 7 is reported to have a serious security flaw, at least the adverts don't jitter when you scroll.

    it might be because of many apps have installed in your Mac, or maybe damage fonts or maybe non safari direct/indirect relating stuff llike add-on/plugin/modify utility.

    If you try another clean install machine(if you got) and do same sort of stuff exactly u did in that 'problematic' mac, the result is the same, then you can almost say/confirm safari is an issue for the certain things you using it with.

    The beach ball as far as my experences tell me it waits for something come up, for instance, i got beach ball when right click at some progrme, system seemed to search relating apps to fill 'open with' sub-menus, the drop menu would show as soon as the search finished.

    Safari would get beach ball at right start of a quicktime movie, coz it had to launch quicktime in first placed. I think you get the idea...

    I've found that some sites will cause Safari to suck up CPU. I think Mapquest is one offender.
