Swiss Macs are a Ripoff!!!!!!

I'm in the market for a new Mac, two, as a matter of fact, an ibook and a Powerbook. So yesterday I went in to my local Mac store and couldn't believe my eyes. The prices here are outrages, are they insane!



ibook 12 700mhz

$1,499.00 CHF 2,799.00 = $468.27 difference



Powerbook Ultimate

$3,799.00 CHF 7,118.99 = $777.45 difference



Total Loss $1245.72

I'm originaly from the US but moved to Switzerland for my company. I've always been a predominant Mac user, but at these prices not for long. Does anyone know of a US company that sells Macs online that ships to Europe? How can any self respecting consumer pay those ridiculous prices. I guess I could make a special trip to the US just to buy the damn things, god knows it would be cheaper.

    Relic: I grew up in Switzerland and paid even higher prices for my first Macs. When I moved to the US for college, I couldn't believe my eyes. The US is a shopper's paradise. Tax-free online shopping makes it even better. After eight years in the US, I couldn't possibly get used to the high prices and sales tax again. The chances of me moving back across the Atlantic are good, but definitely not without regular shopping trips to the States.



    My piece of advice: Get a cheap charter ticket and have a fun shopping weekend in NYC. But make sure to leave the boxes behind in the US. Otherwise the customs agents will milk you upon reentry to Switzerland.

    I totally agree that for most part, European pricing for Apple products is absolutley fckng ridiculous! Best part is that this stuff is no more expensive to ship around Europe from point of manufacture than it is to U.S.



    Question: Do the online Apple store prices from different regions actually correlate with pricing at high street retail stores?



    Next Mac I buy I will, as suggested, get a cheap ticket to the good 'ol U.S .of A and stick the Mac in my luggage (underneath plenty of dirty laundry) and if the customs want import duty they can, as a famous little yellow guy once said, "eat my shorts" for it!

    I am often comparing prices on Macs and other tech goodies with my CH friend. Everything in that area costs so much more there (even adding in the VAT, since taxes are never included in US price quotes). I've heard that musical instruments and equipment are also much more costly. On the other hand, we can't get a decent raclette or williamine here.

    If you order from a US dealer, you will be paying very high shipping, and CH VAT and customs duty...that really adds up. Run all your numbers carefully first, and also check the warranties to make sure they cover outside of US.
