Who here thinks that apple should get rid of the term OS X ??

Right I hope we all agree that apple is the worlds best computer company!

They make best software and hardware!

There's something nice about the word Leopard, the sound of it and the anaimal itself.

I just rolls of the tongue, and it's the coolest cat!

Apple wants to appeal to all, by making not only best computers, but also the easiest to use.

Why not drop the term 'OS X' for Leopard, would it upset too many Mac zealots??

Keep the 10.5.0, but just stop calling the operating system OS X.

So when Leopard is released I think it sould have one name: Leopard (version 10.5).

So tech support for example, might ask: What version of Leopard are you??

And one would reply: 10.5

Sound more straight forward to me.

So in a sense the coadname becomes the only name.

OS X is not nessesary. And should be dropped by apple.

The operating system should be called Leopard!

On the box: Leopard included!

Um, and then for 10.6, they would change the entire name?

I want some of what you're smoking.

There's only one variable that changes: the minor version number. It changes from 4, to 5, to 6, and so on.

To highlight that change, marketing attaches a feline name. Tiger, Leopard, Cougar, whatever.

There's no consumer confusion at all, at least very little compared to what Microsoft is doing with many, many different editions of Windows Vista. Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, Enterprise, and so on. That's confusing.

"10.4" and "Tiger" being interchangeable is not confusing.

Ireland, I would recommend you do some reading on marketing and brandname recognition.

OS X isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Codenames add pizazz, but they are lousy product monikers, and products need continuity in name.

Or perhaps this is 'nothing to add'...

Complete change with each release doesn't streamline anything, and in fact, makes for more chaos. The OS X moniker is what provides continuity.

Precisely. It identifies that the system is for Macs and comes with Macs, that it is connected to many things X (such as Unix), that it is an operating system (many people have a hard time remembering that Windows is an OS, as opposed to, say, Word; no, I'm not joking or exaggerating), etc.

"Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger". It's a little long, granted, but it answers the basic questions on what it is, and what it is for.

I mean heck, why not change the entire product line every few months?

Next year we can be buying Pear Boscs with Leopard installed.

What? You don't know that's the next version of the Apple Macintosh? Lamer. They changed the name of the product, model, and company because it's *KEWL*!

Shh! It's not called a "product" any more.

If you are going to start calling the new Mac OS's by cat breeds, and cat breeds only... then you might as well start selling all apple products in pink and go back to the rainbow apple logo...

There are too many people who hate cats in the world, and 10.9 Tabby would really turn that market off. In fact apple would probably do better by naming their versions after dog breeds.

nah... dogs need too much maintenance.

The difference between OS 9 and OS X was a huge amount ... so to loose the OS X name Apple would have to do a complete overhaul, which OS X doesn't really need right now.

Not to mention 7, 9, 8 or 10 (Microsoft can't seem to decide) different editions of Windows Vista, which, mind you, doesn't even refer to the upcoming Longhorn-based version of Windows Server.

Ah who cares about that crap company!

I'm talking about apple, let's make somthing great even better.

The point is the complex looking name is not important. What's important is the system is great! So why no simplify the name. Take away the things that don't need to be there!

'Mac OS X Leopard' There no need for a name like that!

I just think 'Leopard' is easier to communicate socially and marketing-wise.

In Europe apple computers are few and far between, and most Americans would I think be surprised to know that the average Joe here has no clue about Macs, most have never used one!

Someone new to apple computers might say: "my computer uses Windows XP, you computer looks different!"

To which I would reply: "different, in what way?"

To which they would say: "well, better! It looks clearer, better layed out, and easier to use. That's not Windows, it couldn't be. What operating system is that? What do you use?"

To which I would love to reply: "Leopard!"

To which they would say: "Cool, that looks so cool! I'm would love to get one of those. I'm sick of using Windows. I would love to use Leopard"
