audio/video input

I would like to be able to input video from an analog source (such as a vcr or television) as well as audio from analog/digital sources (such as from an old-fashioned tape player or a DAT player.

Can I get one input device to handle all these things, or will I need a sound card and a video card?

My main purpose right now is to convert audio information from tapes to digital wav or mp3 format so that I can put it on an iPod. For example, the lectures from a class I take are on tape. What's the easiest way to get the tape transfered to the ipod? <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

Thanks for your help

    But tape-&gt;iPod, hook your tape player up to your computer using the mic/line in port. Record using simple sound, or other program. Convert into MP3 in iTunes.

    OR

    ADVC-100 Advanced DV Converter, NTSC/PAL

    Standalone analog-to-digital video converter

    $279.95 <a href="http://shop.store.yahoo.com/ador/vdcaadvc100.html"; target="_blank">http://shop.store.yahoo.com/ador/vdcaadvc100.html</a>;

    I think it does a little more than the dazzle

    Ebby assumes, of course, that you have a line-in port. Many recent Macs do not, although they are being re-introduced. If you can't afford the FireWire solutions:

    The iMic gives you a line-in. Since you're talking lectures, I'm assuming this function might be important enough to you to make this purchase and worry about video later.

    For USB video-in, the MyTV Video Capture and FM is only $150.

    If you get both of these, you'll have video inferior to FireWire solutions, equivalent or superior audio, and you'll save somewhere over $100, depending on taxes where you live. Not much, but students often have budgets that tight, or need to buy something in stages. You might even lack a FireWire port... who knows?

    I have this and it works beautifully. I've never had a problem. I'm not sure if it works the same in X as it does in 9. But regardless, it works perfectly.

    That Dazzle device looks pretty good for converting analog video from tv and vcr.

    AND the other suggestions seem pretty good for analog audio via a line-in or iMic.

    BUT, what would be the best way to get my digital music from my DAT player (has both optical and coaxial digital out) into the computer in a digital format? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

    Don't even think about it unless you have like three grand to spend :eek:

    Actually....

    <a href="http://www.yamaha.com/yec/cavit/"; target="_blank">http://www.yamaha.com/yec/cavit/</a>;

    That'll do your audio nicely for $249. I think I just found out what I'll be buying once I get these darn moths out of my wallet.

    Would this do the trick? It has both optical and coaxial inputs and ouputs.

    $3,000 to $250 to $99 in one day... next somebody's going to know one for a dime!

    Thanks for all the options. Mac communities are the best! <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

    I hope Snoff's suggestion works, because it looks like the easiest way to get digital sound into the computer...of course it doesn't appear to have ANALOG ports, but I can probably use one of the other suggestions and use a line/mic in.

    Thanks again!
