Great possibilities (and long life) for the iMac!
Okay, the FIRST thing out of everyone's mouth after January's MWSF LCD iMac unveiling was "hey, that design lends itself to larger displays down the road, without having to redesign the entire computer...".
I was one of perhaps 2 gazillion people who all chimed in with this.
Well, today it was proven that Apple could (and will) do that.
Cool thing? Imagine the possibilities: unlike the original CRT iMac, which, due to its enclosure/design, was saddled with a 15" CRT for years and years, the design of the LCD iMac probably gives it longer "legs" and life cycle. I could see, by this time next year, a standard 17" display option and perhaps a 19" widescreen or something extra funky?
Even though I'm not in the market to buy one, it's kind cool (and encouraging) to see Apple, for ONCE, quickly do the obvious thing and address people's number one wish/request regarding the LCD iMac (larger screen option).
More typical behavior for Apple would've been to keep the 15" LCD for a good 18 months, then "update" it with a 16" LCD (with the same 1024x768 resolution) sometime in autumn 2003.
You KNOW they would've too! Glad to see a spiffy 17" widescreen iMac.

Looks like good ol' Apple Garamond is being retired?
My SuperDrive iMac has "iMac" written in the traditional Apple Garamond font.
No big deal...just thought I'd pass that along, for those keeping score.
I'm not at all pleased about this Garamond issue. To me, the Garamond was as much a part of Apple's visual identity as their logo. However, there is still a lot of Garamond on the .mac Web pages....
What does this say about us? Only fanatics would be worrying about things like type faces and furry OS X logos! <img src="graemlins/embarrassed.gif" border="0" alt="[Embarrassed]" />
I'm really happy to see the display get a timely update as well - I was scared we'd be stuck with the 15" for a long time.
Can't wait to see one of these puppies in person.

Don't you realize the colors were overused on pretty much every consumer electronics device. It was just getting old. the white is great looking IMO.

I don't know about you guys, but I think that's a BEAUTIFUL line-up of products there! Very, very nice. White, silver, a little glass, etc.
No complaints at all. This is the best Apple has looked since the fruit-flavored and graphite DV iMacs and the original G4 tower (late 1999?).
It all started to get ridiculous with the additional muted colors (Ruby, Indigo, etc.) and the patterns. Don't get me wrong: I liked them all (especially Sage), but it felt "forced" and "okay, it's a new year, we have to think of some new colors to keep up...".
Got old and tired after a couple of years.
Can't go wrong with crisp, classy white and silver.
BTW, I like the idea of having a white computer, then "snazzing it up" or adding color or "pizzazz" with the surrounding accessories.
Got my white snazzy LCD iMac, but have a cool translucent orange lamp, mousepad and other doo-dads to provide the color, since I wasn't able to get a custom Limited Edition tangerine LCD iMac G4.

Suh-weet! That's almost as good as a 19" CRT! Widescreen is cool too. But I'm sure glad they didn't go with a standard 1280 x 1024 LCD, because that's just not a high enough DPI IMHO.
Or, barring all that sending-back-and-forth and "do it yourself" stuff, you could take your LCD iMac to an Apple retail store or authorized Apple service center and they perform the swap-out!
Now THAT would be a cool idea. Hmm...what would I pay for that? $300? $500? Perhaps $500, tops.

Or you could just ask for a DVI connector...
Wouldn't be able to mount it on the arm though.

Picky picky, BUT thanks for noticing. I missed it and I thought fonts-are-I. Anyone still use Kawasaki? EVERY Korean shop on the Manhattan Upper West side seems to have played with its "cursive handwriting" style...

FYI, I saw a Jaguar skinned iMac LCD in Tokyo-- it was awful.

I guess they're using the <a href="http://www.mired.com/mac/mac_04_29_2002.html"; target="_blank">Adobe Myriad font.</a> I like Garamond better, but then I liked free email better, too. I guess I'll take my poke in the eye with a sharp stick like a man.
