Personally, it looks more proportional now.

I like the wide screen better. A 17" 4:3 would have looked goofy, but the 17? wide screen is elegant...

Actually, I think the 17" iMac is a HUGE improvement over the 15" iMac. I just never liked that square display sitting on top of the dome. I agree, it is more proportionate now. I am also glad the resolution is nice and tight too.

i agree anything widecreen will alwase be better, hope it does'nt fall over. Personly i was hoping for the decapited head of bill gates instead of a display being on the new imac, nobody here would be complaining then.

I still think the imac line is ugly. I can't get over the giant, nasty round base.

    Progmac, Cowofwar:

The iMac? UGLY? Are you smoking crack?

Lets see your designs. I am SURE Apple would like your input, judging from Steve's references in every single keynote...

TiFighter... but the problem is that Gates' head would possbily drip blood (in Redmon Red) all over my nice, pure white iMac base. Or perhaps it would ooze a black, viscous substance that smells worse than Windows. Besides, with those glasses, the resolution would be none-too-good.

FWLIW I think it looks a lot better than the 15" iMac. I can't see a lot of utility to it though. I guess I'm just not digitally-lifestyled enough to appreciate it.

Can we get a side by side photo from someone at the keynote? Didn't Apple have any displays with the 15 and 17 next to each other?

The 17" widescreen makes the base look smaller, at least as a smaller proportion of the mass. That's why the larger monitor looks better, IMO. That, and the 17" widescreen monitor is closer to the golden mean proportion.

No side by side photo necessary. Just imagine the 15 inch iMac with 2.4 inches more width in the monitor.

    The 17" looks better.

If it came in a beige, quicksilver or cube like enclosure someone would still have something to say!

Where is the ugly side of something minimal and unobtrusive

Yeah, the base is freakin huge. I mean, the neighborhood kids like to play king of the mountain on it.

Seriously, he is just a troll. Just look at any of his posts. He makes anti-Apple comments every chance he gets.

I think the new display helps to dwarf the over-sized base. And that's a good thing.

Sorry, I was referring to the comments made by cowofwar of course. He doesn't like anything Apple does. Every one of his posts contains "sucks" somewhere I swear. If there is complaining going on you are sure to find him there in force.

I'll tell ya, the cowofwar drinking game® will have you hammered in no time!

I agree with those who like the new 17" better, but hate to because it is what I really wanted when I bought my iMac for fun last January. I now have to take an almost new one out and sell it to make way for "Just Seventeen"

ACTUALLY, at MacWorld the only 15" iMacs were at the vendor's booths-- lots them. ALL the Apple displays were iMac 17 only Which was really impressive and made me wonder if it was all an optical illusion. Then I went to AppleSoHo yesterday morning and saw them next to each other! The 17 is perfect! Oh No. Keep your hands away from the AppleStore Quick Click....
