I love the 16:9 ratio and I'm glad that Apple really embraces it. All they need to do now is "fix" the eMac display and the two studio displays and viola (which is lower than the violin mind you). GO WIDESCREEN!
I think that the Golden Rectangle should be the new standard shape of all of apple's product matrices too. Boring squares are the way of the past, Steve!

i agree that new 17" monitor does make imac more "proportional." friend of mine has two imacs and somehow the plastic looks dirty already, the edges of the drive, etc. i am not a big fan of new imac... something is off.... way off... no, i am not a "dell lover," i had mac since '85-6, and i would not own anything else... but this imac did not really impress me that much.... i think the back of the emac is very very well done.... beautiful.....
I went to the RF store after reading this thread and i tried to twist the imacs there... every one i tried had a slight wobble... even the "old" 15" models... I think it is just a function of the screen... you also wouldnt notice it unless you were trying to make it turn that way, so I wouldnt worry...
I also went to the Apple Store today in NH and noticed that the 15" iMac G4 also has some screen wobble. There is actually a bit of play in the arm at the top, about a 1/16" or so. I think it's just more noticeable when you move the 17" monitor because of the size. Keep in mind the further from the pivot the corner of the screen is the more pronounced the movement will be. If you had a 12" screen (no thanks) it would seem rock solid. A 19" screen would seem even more loose even though the arm assembly would be identical.
Please! Considering what is housed in there its tiny. Not to forget to mention that it needs to be of a certain size/weight to balance the LCD, and possibly its total size(half-cut sphere) has a realationship with the cooling process.
And yes cowofwar does have a tendancy to bitch like mad everytime he posts, but we still love you man
I'm happy with my 15" iMac and it does what I need of it.
I think the 17" would only come into its own if you were watching DVDs (widescreen) but then again, who wants to watch a film hunched over an office chair staring at a monitor for gawds sake?
Get a proper widescreen TV and dedicated DVD player
I also thought the 17" was ugly. Then I saw it at the Woodfield store yesterday (they have 2 of them). Now I think it is awesome. The 15" looks akward now.

This the cube technology at work, people. What do you think all that R & D went to? Making a circular motherboard which is incredibly compact... <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

I agree. As the starter of the ugly mac thread, I stand corrected (I went to the Columbus Apple Store yesterday). Looks better than the 15" My girlfriend still thinks its ugly though.
i also didn't think the new 17 inch imac screen was good looking but i thought i'd have to see it in person. i went to the mac store yesterday and it was even uglier than i thought it'd be. i know everyone else seems to love it, especially after seeing it in person. but hey, i guess i'm just odd
Is the diplay just wider or is it also a touch taller? Either way, I can't see it as anything other than a big improvement (both functionally and aesthetically) to the original.

It's a LITTLE bit taller, but only marginally. You don't pay much attention to the height because you're so awed by how wide it is.
I also noticed that they used a new font on the front. No more Garamond. Although the 15" still are the same.
I may be wrong, but it looks like the screen is a little thinner than the 15". Anyone have side by side pictures or anything?

I read this somewhere else also... i ahve not checked... but it is certainly possible and plausible...

someone's a dell-loving troll because they think the imac is ugly? trolls can't accuse others of being trolls.

Time to give the girlfriend the 'flick'.
Lemon Bon Bon
PS. The widescreen iMac is gorgeous.
