Ok, I got my iBook -- you are all smoking crack w/r/t to 'snappiness'

Ok, I'd like to see some of this 'slow rsponse' time everyone has been talking about on the iBook.

Because the iBook I have (new 700 MHz Combo, only with 128 MB; I'm waiting for the RAM in the mail) running 10.1.5 shows none of these lags y'all are talking about.

All of these 'non-snappy' reports from around the web really had me worried, but so far, I think people have been exaggerating this problem, beccause this sumbjtch flies.

If this is 'slow', I can't wait for Jaguar!

once you start installing more and more apps, have thousands of more files, etc etc, OS X seems to slow down.

If I create a new user and log in to that account seeing it has no files to track, etc, its very snappy indeed.

In my normal account, I have tens of thousands of files. Startup, or login, takes a full 2 minutes to finish before I can launch apps and stuff. Otherwise, if I try and launch an app, no matter what, as soon as the dock appears, itll bounce forever, and then I;ll get 'this application has unexpectedly quit'. So, I have to wait until I hear the HD stop grinding around loading files and whatnot.

    Anyway, enjoy your new baby

i forgot to add that I have an iBook 14inch 600mhz with 384mb ram and 10.1.5. Have had my same installation of OS X since Febuary... havent reinstalled since. Will wait until Jaguar to do that

I have the old 600 Combo (with the Rage video), and 640MB RAM. For most things on 10.1.5, it's snappy enough. What I find slow:

    - VPC (Win2K, XP)

    - iTunes full visuals (<5 fps)

    - modeling thermonuclear detonations at the atomic level

Other than those above, I'm pretty happy. I use this thing 16 hours a day, much to my girlfriend's displeasure.

I'd pay $129 for Jaguar if I can get faster iTunes visuals. Shows you where my priorities are.

I think the 700 combo iBook is pretty snappy. Had mine for about a month now. With 128MB it can get a little less smooth running multiple apps. When I upgraded to 384MB, though, everything is pretty smooth now. I'm very pleased with the purchase. Seems like Jaguar is supposed to be giving a nice performance bump as well. I'm getting about 11-18 fps with iTunes visuals full screen, much in part to the Radeon Mobility I think.

Have you installed iTunes 3 yet? It has the option to use OpenGL for visuals. I noticed about a 40% increase in framerate on my machine.

Actually it might have to do with iTunes visuals being an utter pig, I haven't heard of anyone getting respectable Visuals frame rates on any mac. I still think it's really kinda stupid to want to have visuals for your music -- supposedly you want to be able to do something productive with your machine while playing a few Mp3's in the background and not stare stone faced at some funky color shifting visuals. <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" /> How come windows media player has no such problems?

Hey man, like your quote: "Apple: raising prices, not performance." It's not completely true, of course, but the idea's right. They're comparatively expensive and not raising performance levels fast enough to keep up with their Wintel competition.

I'm sorry folks. I know this has little to do with this particular thread. Just frustrated with my preferred platform. As for the gentleman who originally posted about his iBook, I'm glad you're pleased with the performance of your baby. On G4s, I've seen respectable performance with OS X. I have a B&W G3 and of course, it's OS X speed is fairly sluggish, depending on what I want to do. But even the G4s are not that much better. I'm hoping that 10.2 will be the speedy OS upgrade Apple's saying it will be.

the cuteness of my ibook, almost makes up for the fact that i lost half the speed after installing Finale and Peak LE and Roxio Toast on it. The iBook is ausome.

Matsu, now I *have proof* that you're too uptight. You're NOT supposed to be productive when doing iTunes visuals, and you ARE supposed to stare stone(d) faced at the funky color shifting visuals. That's the point (at least as I see it). Better living through chemistry and technology.

Nope, it's a new option in iTunes 3.

I just think my iBook is slow cuz it is 500Mhz and 66Mhz bus. That is my complaint, but it really isn't THAT slow. It's usable

The 500 would be much slower than the 700 Sahara. The improved bus and Radeon mobility can't hurt either.

Are you running any other apps in the background? I'm getting a solid 21 fps in full screen with iTunes3 on my iBook 700.

I am running an ibook 700 14" with 384 megs ram and find it very snappy also. This is my first Mac and I have no complaints about it although you will find many other people on here that have complaints weather they are worth complaining about or not, they seem to think so but I choose to ignore them.

    Cyko:

I'm not running any apps in the background, so I don't know why I'm getting lower fps. I tried it again and was getting 16-18 consistently. I don't use visualizations much, so it's not a big deal.

    ZO:

If you run visualizations, click on the options button on the upper-right corner of iTunes. You'll find the OpenGL option there.

Duh, who uses the visualisations NOT in full screen?!?! Thanks though. I get around 13-16fps in OpenGL and Normal.

BTW, there doesnt seem to be any difference between OpenGL and normal. hmmm

After installing iTunes 3.0, my full screen fps went from "3" to "4." Woohoo!!

I can't use the OpenGL option, as it keeps "unclicking."
