I can enable high resolutions on new iBooks
I've only tested this in OS 9:
1) Plug in an external CRT into the mini VGA port
2) Insert an external keyboard or mouse
3) Put the iBook to sleep by closing the lid
4) Release the lid latch but do not lift the screen
5) Wake the iBook by pressing a button on the external mouse or keyboard
6) Once the harddrive spins up and the external screen starts to warm up, lift the iBook screen all the way
This should cause your computer to believe the the external VGA port is the primary monitor port. The LCD will be completely disabled while you're in this mode. This lengthens the display's lifetime.
If you time this procedure correctly, you'll be able to access resolutions up to 1920x1440, or some such. I myself only run at 1600x1200 so I can have 75 Hz on my paltry 19" monitor.
The same procedure using the TV adapter lets you access the lower resolution of 512x384, which is within NTSC without filtering and produces a clearer, more useable output.
It may take a little while for you to get the right timing on the procedure. Also, you may find yourself in a position where the computer won't stay asleep, but rebooting the computer fixes this and having the very high external resolutions is well worth the effort.

BTW, I had my CRT CTX 17" up to 1280x1024 (I think thats it, 1280xWhatever) <img src="graemlins/surprised.gif" border="0" alt="[Surprised]" />
I wish someone would write a proggie that would take care of this once and for all.
