Apple Store is pi$$ing me off!

I placed an order last week for a 17" iMac, and it said 3-4 weeks for shipping. So this morning, I convinced a friend at work to get one too, so we go in online, and it says 1-2 days. I call Apple and say "how come mine was 3-4 weeks" and she says "because you added RAM"

OK, so I cancel the order, and order an iMac without extra RAM, and she confirms that I am all set for 1-2 days. I check back later in the day, and it is back at 3-4 weeks!!!!

So now I have waited over a week FOR NOTHING! Some moron at Apple made a typo, which they corrected in a few hours. So now I have the full 3-4 weeks to wait all over again.

Sorry guys, I need to purge.

Probably due to supply and demand rather than some "moron".

Oh come on, from 1-2 days to 3-4 weeks in 4 hours, what did the whole of China wake up and suddenly crave an imac??Where are you in Scotland?? I live in Boston now, but was born in Glasgow!

From someone who's never purchased anything from the Apple Store online, what's the advantage of them versus MacMall or MacWarehouse? Seems like you always get freebies from the other resellers....

Well I think, in theory, one assumes that you may get things faster ordering straight from Apple. Of course, the one problem with this theory is that it is total crap. Not just in regards to my order, but am I the only one getting sick of no Apple product being readily available after an announcement?? I have never waited less than a month for a new machine!

I understand the whole "secrecy=free publicity" thing, but all you end up having is pent up demant and a lot of pissed off customers. Like me!

Ordering from the Apple Store allows you to configure your machine the way you want it; there isn't too much you can change on an iMac but on the other models you can add RAM, bigger hard drives, different video cards, etc. The other online resellers usually have only the standard configurations.

As to the RAM issue, I think this happened with some people who ordered iMacs when they were introduced. Apple is trying to fill the distribution channel so they pump out lots of the stock config, and the CTO purchases end up being a lot slower than they would be later. Remember, tho, that the long time quoted is just Apple covering their rear ends; it might actually ship much sooner. The last time I did a CTO, I was quoted 5-7 days and it shipped in one.

Edit: forgot to quote i am monkey, the first para is in answer to that question.

You know what though.. it's really crummy. They introduce this hot new product and people get crazed and want them pronto and they always take so damn long to get them out in the supply chain. I keep saying this, if you're going to introduce something, you damn well had better have the supply to back it up. Hell start selling them at the shows, people would hand over their credit cards in a heartbeat. I don't understand this whole waiting thing. HP releases a new computer it's in every friggin CompUSA within a week. Friggin Apple, why do I keep buying your awesome products?

Well, if the people in the damn manufacturing factories stop leaking the new products and if we stop trying pry information out of everything that moves, we could have stuff immediately. HP can do it because no one gives a damn.

I have noticed this in a couple threads.. Would you really change your order just to have the product ship faster? .. Patience, people, patience..

I don't think it was too bright to cancel your order and place a new one. After waiting for two weeks, you just put yourself at the back of the line again, even if it is a simpler order that allegdly ships faster.

I do sympathize with your impatience. My wife and I are always fighting over our PC, so we decided to get another computer; I chose a Mac. Naturally, the best one out there isn't shipping yet. I ordered two weeks ago today. The wait is driving me nuts, too, but it does no good to get angry about it (depressed, maybe).

And I don't see what good it does to rant at Apple. They have no incentive to do their job better. All they have to do is post the specs and we'll come running with our green. So what do they care if we have to wait? From Apple's point of view, they can widen the window of time in which a product sells if they announce it before it's ready. And it helps Apple keep its inventory low, which is good for the stock price.

You can rant, but you come off sounding like a child and accomplish nothing.

Iplaced the new order beacuse I called Apple and they confirmed that shipping time was now 1-2 days, and that it was my BTO that was holding it up. The story actually received some mentions in mac press, I saw it after I posted this thread. Apple, for about 3 hours changed the iMac 17" ship time to "1-2 days" It must have just been a f*ck up on the part of somebody at apple.com.

As for your closing comments, I have spent my life sounding like a child and accomplishing nothing, I had never before considered it grounds for insult! Hmmm, it seems that I now have something new to think about. Robin.

Oh, and to Jamie the mod: I come home to Glasgow once a year, and never had any idea that there are people there using Macs! Very cool. I always thought that the UK was, for the most part, all windows. I used to go to the beach out in Ayr when I was a boy, god I miss home!!

Not a good idea to go for a swim at the beach in Ayr these days! You might come out with a few extra body parts

Yeah there are a few Mac users over here! The University I work in uses mostly Macs.

You miss home??! Let's swap then, I'll move to Boston and you can come over here!

I've never quite understood this, people have a legitimate gripe and when expressing it they come off as a child? Since when can't we all blow off a little steam about something that is aggravating? Get your head outta your ass, people can complain about stuff. Who cares if it doesn't accomplish anything besides blowing off some steam and getting a few people to sympathize.

With regards to the which is better Apple or Resellers like MacMall or MacWarehouse, it always makes more sense to order from the Resellers because of the freebies.

    Here's why:

Resellers are prevented from selling Macs below the minimum advertised price. So, to get around that they toss in some free ram and a printer. Voila! cheaper computer. Yes, you do have to wait a little longer, but considering that MacMall and others usually add at least 256MB of RAM (~$40) and ship free, it ends up saving you money. The only time it makes sense to use the Apple store is if you have a stduent/educators discount.

This sucks but I have also heard that it is better to order the standard Macs from some like MacMall or Frys. Frys has a better warranty than Mac does! Plus MacMall will tell you if they have em in stock and they will add ram for you.

True, but they will charge you $40 to install it.

ClubMac gives you the option of taking the "free" RAM or an instant discount, which is nice. I'd rather take the disount and buy and install the RAM myself.
