I consider it an exclaimation of mock panic, I guess. So, 'AIEEEEE!' but in a normal tone of voice, with a slight raise at the end.
Quoting a dictionary out of context doesn't make it right -- I was referring to the application of the word within the sentence. I understand the word mock better than you do; now take your Websters Jr. and apply it to your original sentence and see if your first posting makes any sense.
