[quote] But you must admit these are fine Macs....not great, but very fine indeed. A decent stepping stone to the Power 5 or whatever it will be called.

Hey, hold on a second!! I would most assuredly shag the shit out of that speaker (if only it were a wee tad bigger) if it would get the damn thing to come home with me. There is no question that the machines ROCK!
I started this thread, not as a bitch-fest, but merely to say, that sexy they may be, but pretty they aint!!
They could clean up the face with a QS style bezel: one piece, keep the holes and speaker location of the portal (tm) mac, keep the drive locations too, but no steel bezel, just two QS style trays that happen to fit full-size bays behind them.
I think it would look better, anyon wanna mock one up?
On to more important things, I think this case will be with us for a good long while, and really why shouldn't it?
Even now it looks better than anything in PC land, they kept the beautiful swing out door, it takes two full size optical bays, hold 4 HDD's, has 4 DIMM slots, has 4 *empty* PCI slots and an AGP slot.
Seems to me that all of the case design issues have been successfully adressed.
To me, it looks like a substantial MoBo redesign with components moving about every which way compared to the old. I think the work has been done, and any updates will come in the form of an updated controller here and there. AGP 8X, 64bit/66Mhz PCI, or PCI-X, 4GB RAM support, faster firewire, USB2.0, etc etc... Shouldn't these things be relatively easy to add now? We're really only talking about a new controller chip or slightly altered traces in any one of these instances. Increasing the RAM limit is probably just a matter of a ROM flash and finding 1GB dimms with acceptable tolerances just as an example.
I kinda hope this design sticks around, the case is a winner, they could tweak the front a bit, but the internal layout is damn near perfect.
JYD is right. I don't care if the thing comes in a beige box again, (you folks REMEMBER that we don't have to endure beige anymore)if it will give me the performance I want. I would take the hood off of a Buick and hammer it into a case if it meant that I could get hardware that is as snappy as this new PM.
Its the GUTS that count people. Apple had to do SOMETHING for heat dissipation. So you fools answer me this: would you rather have a few holes on the front of your tower or a helicopter inside to cool the thing? Bitching about the holes on the back? How many hours a day do some of you anal types have to stare at the BACK of the computer. BALDERDASH! POPPYCOCK!

I would think there could have been other ways to design a vent.
Perhaps it could have one large vent hidden under a bevel which would be was less obvious and in your face.
I understand if this is just a tie over until a fully new enclosure is ready, because frankly, it looks exactly like that to me...quick and dirty.
The only problem with this case is the face (and it really isn't that bad, though it isn't as beautiful as the QS). Maybe a one-piece QS style face plate (as I described earlier) would clean up the appearance.
I hope they leave the inside layout EXACTLY as it is, the space efficiency and easy access are awesome.
hey you know what? It really doesnt look too bad! I agree its odd, bu hey its still cool! And you know what the computer has true expandability so anything goes frankly!
I think there must be a better design solution for the requirement to suck air in through the front, but I do like the metal panel for the optical drives.
Still, i spend more time looking at the screen than I do at the Mac itself... but then, I do have a Cube.
Oh, and who totally screwed the formatting on this thread?
I think it's part of Apple's new Switch campaign...design an ugly box so PC users can relate to. Only then will they consider switching.

I thought that was the point of charging $130 for 10.2?
Hey as long as it doesn't sound like a F-16 jet flying over my house, a few holes are not going to bother me one bit. Sure the QuickSilver case was pretty, but it was loud to, way too loud. Hopefully all of these 'bullet holes' are the result of Apple design working to make the machine keep cool enuff while keeping it as quiet as possible.
I will be waiting yet a little longer for a new tower.. but I really like the looks of where we're headed.
Have any of you taken a look at the Quicktime VR of this new beast? Are there also two rows of 'Bullet Holes" (similar to the back, not the speed vents) right at the bottom front of the face inside the area of the "foot/handle"?
This beast really needs cooling.. how many of you have your tower on the floor? I could see a mini-hoover effect happening there.. dust bunnies beware!

i didn't know companies still sold beige computers.
"Cyclops the Snitch"
Frankie "Cyclops" Balbone, after giving his testimony to the cops - is found laying in the street.
riddled with bullet holes.
Man, this thing is gonna smack my G4 up.
I might trade for one.

Perhaps George Carlin is right about America.

That's not beige, thats industrial waste!

yeah, that's what it really looks like.
