It'll go the way of PNG and JPEG2000. Storage space really isn't that much of an issue. Even phones today have access to fairly fast networks and more memory than ever before.

Plus the name is horrible. Windows Media Photo?? Please change the name. A JPEG replacement shouldn't have "Windows" in the title and "Media" is far too generic.

PNG is lossless though so it can't rival JPEG for compressing photos. It says that WMP can compress to half of JPEG2000. My worry is that if M$ include it in their next system and the dumb-ass majority of computer users decides to use it and M$ provide no way of decoding on different systems, we could end up with a similar situation to wmv. The only real consolation is that I'm sure only about 3 people will upgrade to Vista: Bill Gates, Steve Balmer and that developer who showed off Vista in all its glory playing all new solitaire.

For a graphic "document", PNG is by far the best format, because it's open-standard and can be viewed with basic programs while having proprietary effects from Fireworks or Photoshop applied to it. It's much better than PSD in my opinion.
