If you watch the qtvr of the case opening, you will see that there is an enormous fan behind it. It's basically:

    holes--fan--heatsink--holes in the back

In theory, this should allow for excellent cooling with low noise (since the fan is so big, it can turn slowly). I want reviews! Buy it already and tell me about it

Thanks God it boots into OS9.

That's all I have to say.

Probably not, a big fan means little noise. Why? The bigger it is, the slower it can run while moving the same amount of air as a tiny, puny, awfully loud fan. The faster it runs, the noisier is it. The holes make air flow easier as well and considering the fact that the air will flow over the heatsink nicely (see the design), I don't think the fans need to break a sweat. Unless those 1.25 Ghz procs will heat you house in the winter of course, but I doubt it.

When these things go on display, 2 of the 3 models are only going to have 256MB of ram. I suspect people trying them out could be dissapointed in the performance.

Way must Apple be so skimpy on the RAM, I meen

pro computers with Dual 1GHs Processors and even a 867, with 256MB of RAM, come on thay need 512 at lest, apps like P'shop eat RAM for breakfast.

Thank you for pointing out that 333 DDR is indeed a 167, but what if Motorola brings out a 333 DDR MPX, how much more performance increase will the new PowerMac gets?

Another question is PC now supports DDR with 266 at least (PC2100). Do they employ a same scheme like MPX, and if they do, are their MPX clocking at 133 MHZ SDRAM or PC 2100?

Didn't the previous dual gig's have 2mb L3 cache. Looks like they lowered them to 1mb L3

Looks like that these 'new' PowerMac are more oriented to video editing than other categories.

3D wills till suck on these machines for sure.

Actually, you could put a CD in one drive, and dupe the entire disc to the other drive, forget about SOME songs.

And no, you don't need 2 cd burners. Buy the tower with one burner and then drop a cheap CD-ROM drive into the second expansion bay. That is why some of us have hated the Powermac towers for so long, because instead of dropping $50 on a CD-rom, Apple laid us over a barrel by forcing us to drop hundreds on a Firewire peripheral drive.

This is huge, but it should have been included with the very first iteration of the El Capitain case, i.e., the B&W towers should have had two external drive bays!!!

[quote]The one that's the same as the old top end, MHz-wise, has a 25% faster pipe to 50% faster RAM, and should have better graphics and hard drive performance than the old model. It has room for more drives in the case, as well.

And it's $500 cheaper than it was yesterday, too.

If Mot pulls it off, much more than any other 333DDR bus on the market could offer.

However, Mot has said that their market has no interest in a DDR MaxBus, so I assume the next step will be toward HyperTransport or (if Mot, more likely) RapidIO as a connecting bus.

That would be fine with me.

MPX is Mot's bus. Nobody else uses MPX. The clock on a "266MHz" system bus runs at 133MHz, and the PC vendors are connecting PC2100 RAM to those busses. So the bus and the memory are DDR.

The chief difference between a DDR "266MHz" bus hooked up to PC2100 RAM and a real 266MHz bus hooked up to (hypothetical) PC266 RAM is that in the DDR solution the latency (the time it takes the memory to respond to a request) is no better than PC133, and the double data rate only kicks in for streaming chunks of contiguous memory; the worst case performance is equivalent to PC133 on a 133MHz bus. On a true 266MHz bus, the latency would be halved and the transfer rate would be twice as fast in all cases - but the heat and cost would be prohibitive. So we have DDR.

However, the bus on a PC usually isn't anywhere near as efficient as MaxBus is (the aging 60x bus on the G3 doesn't come close). Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see a DDR MaxBus (although it will never happen) or a suitably high bandwidth alternative. Not because we have to keep up with the Joneses, but because the G4 is bandwidth-starved. However, the current MaxBus is better than the numbers imply, and PC DDR busses are often worse than the numbers imply.

So MOT hasn't come up with any chip upgrades then. Except the 167 Mhz Bus (which is nice) but the same old 1 GHz processor * (167/133) = 1.25 GHz with 2 MB L3.

and not until end of September, what's the hold-up?

G4Dude, I like your G4 concept case design better than todays new ones.

Some great questions are being posed here. I wish I knew the answers. But let me restate them slightly differently:

If the throughput from main memory to the CPU's is increased by :

    33%, will the rendering/filter performance

tests increase by close to 33%

    100%, will the ...

    ...increase by close to 100%?

I can't help but suspect that some other factors come into play. I'm looking forward to some independent test results.

Did you ever read the rest?

Yes I said 3D will still suck. But for video stuff it's pretty decent.

actually, i believe you can BTO a superdrive in the 867

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm intensely interested in seeing some comparisons between the new dual gig and the old one.

    So someone order one already!
