Erase Free Space almost killed my HD

Has anyone had bad experiances with Erase Free Space?? I tried it and it filled the HD to the point that I had 47KB of memory left, and then went through a series of serious crashes until I got it to boot from the Installer Disk. I'm using a new iMac Intel 2GHz, 250GB HD. After the reboot the finder says that I have 174GB memory left and using 39Gig, which is about correct, or at least a believable number. Just wondering if others have had problems. Is there a work around or is this a work in progress, or did I do something wrong?

It's probably not a good idea to do it while running other software because they might be adjusting VM caches or what not. I've done a free space erase a few times without problems but usually right after a reboot so that nothing else is running at the time.
