I think we're all in need of a good Test Drive on this baby, but looks like we'll have to wait a bit. Too bad Apple couldn't have had this out at Macworld NY, since with the 6-8 week lead time, how can I order this for myself, let alone commit university resources to it?

I'd like to point out that the only model with a 6-8 week wait time is the 1.25 GHz model. The other two are available in 1-3 days, which means Apple, as always, is waiting for Motorola to cough up 1.25 Ghz chips in quantity.

And the new case isn't really the same... much better cooling capacity, two optical drives up front, 4 internal hard drives... that's a big improvement. It's obviously based on the Quicksilver case but it's not the same.

Quite true: the internal metal casing is very different, but only the front and rear plastic panels have changed. Quite an Apple tradition: get it right first time, then play with the details for a few years.

One thing I will bet on: these are quieter than Quicksilvers (anyone got the codename yet?).

Yes, absolutely. Better airflow - less need for a fan. There is a nice big fan in there, but big fans don't need to rotate as fast as small fans. It should be quieter than the current - well, "old" now - quicksilvers.

what is the difference between ultra ata and ata such so is ultra ata 100 fater than ata 100 and is ata 133 a big diference also is ddr 2700 the highest in that ram set. and they lowered the l3 cache it used to be 2 mb now its only 1mb on the 1ghz. sux. and y dont they ever compare it ot the athlon. uses windows right. and y then y did the quicksilier berfore have 2 slots well at least u could see 2 slots. what about zip drives now u cant use t he internal one they took that out tisk tisk.

front side bus what does that do.

As I sit here on my frequently blue screen of death Win 98 machine, I am getting ready to do the switch, which I thought was to the TI 800 Powerbook, but then I look at the new powermac with essentially the same price and dual 1.25's plus superdrive...what do I do, what do I do...(dual 867's and an ibook?)

Now now, we all know university resources exist mainly for our guilty pleasures. Go ahead, order it! It's either a new Powermac for you or financial aid for some toked up freshman.
