Which dual did YOU buy?

So...Now that they're released, which new PowerMac G4 did everyone buy?(Assuming you actually bought one, of course.)

I ordered:

Dual 867 G4

256 MB DDR RAM (266MHz)

60 GB HD(7200 rpm)

ATI Radeon 9000 Pro

1 MB L3 cache per processor

256 k L2 cache

Combo Drive(I'll get a third party superdrive later)

10.2, etc., etc., etc.

This baby's gonna scream compared to my current computer(iBook 500).

Actually, I'm still debating to either get a 17" iMac or a dual 867.

I have an older Viewsonic PT810 monitor but I really want a new LCD panel but can't afford a new unit in addition to a new PowerMac but on the other hand I don't need all the expansion the PowerMac offers.

I went and checked the pricing and a dual 867 with a SuperDrive is about $100 cheaper than the 17" iMac. I know the speed is better on the PowerMac because of the mobo and CPUs but I get more HD space on the iMac. Graphics are the same...

I waited patiently for these new machines to make a decision, I bought a new iBook 600 a couple of weeks ago to replace my older TiBook 400 and now I want a desktop to compliment it.

Any thoughts?

Me thinks i'm gonna buy dual 867

i have a monitor already so an imac isn't for me and twice the power for 300 bucks less is pretty enticing....but then again no superdrive...then theres ddr though...

i think the powermac is worth caues of the expandibility alone

Medazinol,

An iMac and an iBook would be a sweet combo. I'm sure that for most consumers, the new iMac(17" flat-panel) would be more than adequate. The main difference(besides the addition of another processor) in my view is the new motherboard. Even though the DDR is XServe-style, it is still supposed to increase performance of high-end graphics cards. This could make a difference in gaming but I'm not sure to what degree it would have an effect. The big advantage of the iMac is the SuperDrive and the included 17 " flat-panel.

So basically it all boils down to how much of a power user you are. If all you do is surf the net, email, and play the odd game, I would suggest the iMac. If, however, you plan on doing some digital video, photography editing, as well as all of the things mentioned above, then the new PowerMac would be the way to go.

you're not serious about the hd space are you? that's a pretty weak comparison, if you don't need the expansion you certainly don't need 80 gigs. the dual 867 will be ridiculously faster for the price (as compared to the 17")

I was all set to get the 17" iMac but now that 1ghz powermacs cost 500 bucks less and they now have a faster bus and ddr memory I'm leaning towards the powermac. Maybe Santa will bring me a cinema display for it. I've been good, honest

You know those of us who want the top have to wait until OCTOBER to score. A wait that long makes me want to wait to order until then. No telling what specs will change including 10.2.1 probably. I am also waiting for FCP 3 to be certified for 10.2 + to have QT 6 Pro in the box. So October seems like enough time for the remainder of QT 5 Pro FCP 3's to be flushed through the pipeline.

Word is that iMovie 3 will also be released by then. And iCal and the rest of the July promises will be bundled by then as well. I hate to have to wait but it's Apple's problem in the first place to make us. By then I can even imagine the displays haveing a lower price. Hell, we might even get faster SuperDrives by then.

For the more adventurous among us, Im betting that the 867 is going to overclock really well.

167 bus, and 5.5x multiplier for 913, or 6x for 1gig.

No, the dual 867 still has a 133 MHz bus. Only the 1.00 GHz and 1.25 GHz have 167 MHz buses.

I am aware of that - hence overclocking.

The 867 uses the same chipset as the 1 & 1.25, it will probably have no issues running at 166.

However, 166 x 6.5 = 1080, and thats a fairly big boost for the 867 ( although it might do it ).

Therefore, it will be nessecary to reduce the multiplier to 6x or 5.5x to try and get it to run.

I think the heat removal of the new machines will be up to the task.

The only unknown is the cpu, which may not cope with a 166 bus. It would have been likely if the 1 and 1.25 werent shipping immediately, but the 1 is.

Therefore, I think, that just like the iBook and iMac, it is artificialy crippled to make the high end machines look better.

Most users will be quite content with the 867 as is, however I see real potential there for it to be far and away the best value mac for a long time.

Of course, we will have to wait till a few people get their machines, and try to boost them.

Ill be dissapointed if it dont fly, but the 867 is still a whole lot better value than yesterdays 800, so Im not going to worry about it for long.

Interesting that a lot of you opted for the GeForce 4 Ti... I'm about to buy the dual 1 GHz tower myself. BTO with the GeForce 4 Ti and without the modem.

I recommend that nobody add memory at the Apple store... it's 2-3 times more expensive that way. Just get your Mac with the RAM it comes with by default and buy the rest somewhere else like Ramjet, Memory X or even a store like Fry's. It's standard PC2700 DDR memory after all, you should be able to get it just about anywhere.

I'm sort of glad I bought my Dual 1 GHz in January.

The DDR is dressing. The drive bays? 2 5.25" is nice, but 4 3.5" is unnecessary, and still possible with a QuickSilver. ATA/100? I can still add an ATA/133 PCI card to my system if I want it...

The dual 867 is a great deal but if I was looking for a dual 1 GHz, I would probably save the bucks and buy the old one for $2200. I'll bet the performance difference is marginal. For sheer badness, the dual 1.25 will have its audience, but I'm sort of glad that my system wasn't the last stop-gap before we get some real bandwidth. Hopefully something magical will happen between now and 2004 (IBM's desktop POWER4 derivative with SIMD.) I'll probably buy another Power Mac three (possibly four) revisions from now.
