When will Apple sell macs with atleast 1GB of ram standard?
I was wondering since most PC vendors are starting to sell more and more computers with 1GB of Ram standard (of course vista has a lot to do with this), I know the high end 15" MacBook Pro and 17" MacBook Pro come with 1GB, but what about the rest of the lineup?
I really think the high end iMac really should have 1GB of Ram and hopelly when apple gives them there next speed bump/spruce up they will. I'm not so sure about the low end iMac but I would love to see a Ram upgrade here aswell.
I expect all Mac Pro/Tower to have 1GB standard and i expect to see the low end MacBook Pro get the upgrade aswell.
I doubt that the Mac Mini and Macbook (same for the eMac) will get any Ram upgrade until next year but I was thinking if Apple really wanted the Black MacBook to stand out (and justify the price a little bit better) they should have included 1GB of Ram... I think that would have kept people from complaining about the price
Anyways this is my opinion but I would love to hear your opinions on the subject!

while I agree most will have the new standard by that time I still don't think the low end MacBooks/Mac Mini/Emacs will have the new standard atleast not until (perhaps) this time next year (at the earliest), but I'm not sure.
btw it's in January

So true.

Or when the profit margin on memory upgrades become insignificant.

my feelings exactly
When will Apple sell macs with atleast 1GB of ram standard?
When everyone else provides 2 GB of RAM standard.

I was just curious what people would think of having the machines come with a 512 permanent, and empty banks. What would the disadvantages be?
The disadvantage would be that the new Intel macs are dual-channel capable. The memory bus can only operate dual-channel if memory is installed in matching pairs. Dual-channel doubles the memory bandwidth, and is particularly important in the case of the MacBook and Mac Mini, as the GPU uses system RAM.
Soldered-in RAM instead of RAM in a slot also sucks because you can't take it out and replace it with something higher-capacity.

Hence the reason for this thread. Try to keep up, Ireland!
Anyhoo, Macs can run decently with 512MB right now. I think Apple probably keeps them down because they are acutely aware that their machines are ALREADY more expensive than most consumers are comfortable with. If they were to up the RAM, they'd have to up the cost and turn off many more potential buyers. It's a delicate balance.
Dual 2.66GHz Xeon/Woodcrests with 1GB RAM and a decent video card for $2499 for the mid-end. It's a long shot but one can dream.

Or, gasp! reduce their margins by 1%.

Well, I think Macs do o.k. with 512 MB RAM. I know that Kikahaha, for one, would disagree you.

So. I own a Mac, and I know what I see!
I do a lot of photoshop work at 512 and everything runs smoothly.

For the record, macs run just fine and peachy at 512 MB RAM.

I supposse that's why they're not upgradable. Actually they are! I wonder why that is? \
"for the record" What do you think this is? A Spiderman movie.

I run Fireworks, Firefox, and iTunes at once on a G4 Powermac with 256.
