Front plate on new towers : what kind of plastic ?

I watched carrefully the large tif images from Apple, showing the new G4 case.

The front plate material appears to be different than on the winter's Quicksilver.

What is the material used for the CD's plate ? Silvered metal ?

Any toughts on this ?

the front plate is different from the material used in the quicksilver, but the rest of the machine still uses the same plastic. this is why the new machine looks so awkward...the plate stands out too much, as well as the four holes. the material is probably stainless steel with a mirror finish...chrome. i'm thinking that it is the same material as the back plate of the iPod. now, if only the large apple logos on the side of the machine were als chrome, the new design would make more sense

I got to take a look at the new tower at my little apple store (unfortunatly not a "real" apple store). It acctually looks quite stellar. I didn't like the pictures at all but it is really nice when you see it in person.

Good to hear your report. I've yet to touch one, but am looking to be reassured... How about the noise level from the fan ripping through all the air to cool the duals and sucking in wind?

I played with the new duals at Compusa this afternoon. The new front plates are very shiny and reflective. It is like a mirror.

What about the noise level ?

And what about the CD plate, when you press the open key ? Is the plate robust ?

In a big open store its difficult to judge noise level. I wasn't really paying attention. Same with the CD plate. I hit eject a couple of times to watch it go in and out. Didn't seem diffeent than previous models. I'm sure its robust.

Mostly I played with 10.2. Although, standing in the store without a network connection there wasn't much to do. I liked the More info... button in About This Mac. It just brings up the system profile app - but its a nice touch.

If this is any help, I was able to hear the fan(s) on the new PMs over music in the Apple Store.

it is very elegant design if you could see it and open it and look inside out. dual 1.25 is more noiser that the other two. i have to push hard to close it on my g4 450 enclosure. but on the new power mac, it is just a tiny finger tip push.
