I agree in part with the question of price.

Macs are not cheap. but then, neither is software development.

Take the free iApps... this type and quality of software isn't cheap to develop and buying software companies so as to obtain the rights to produce software package isn't cheap either...Apple makes its profit on hardware so as to subsidise the software side of its business.

Im no flag waving Apple lunatic, I constantly talk computer to a few guys at work who incidentally use wintel machines and like to hear there tales of woe when this app crashes and that piece of hardware won't co-operate.

They are pretty interested to hear how the Mac does this and that and the differences and similarities in both platforms, but when I ask if they'd actually consider buying a Mac they say "but they're so expensive and pretty slow too aren't they?"

They're not slow by no means I reply, and inform them of the Megahertz myth and velocity engine etc. and they seem to understand, but I still find it pretty hard to justify the price at times

Bryan, why are you even involved in this conversation when you don't know the answers to even the simplest Mac-related questions? You think PCs are better but you don't know why. I mean you even thought you couldn't use AVI files on a Mac... what else don't you know?

I'm guessing pretty much all of it. All you know is MHz numbers and price, and you're trying to argue that PCs are better somehow because of it... even though you have no idea how good the iApps are, for example. And then there's your lack of grammar and spelling... I mean honestly, are you just a 13 year old or what?

So I don't really give anything you say much credence. You clearly don't understand what Macs offer, even though it's been explained a good number of times, and you make a lot of incorrect assumptions without bothering to check if they're correct first. So there really isn't much point in trying to explain anything to you, because you don't listen.

Just get a PC and forget about trying to understand Macs.

    New State-of-the-art PM $4999.US

    New State-of-the-art Jaguar OS $129.US

Where is the great Apps cost?

The plan truth is the price of Apple Highend Hardware is outrageous and sales will probably keep going down on those systems.

Now I get it. If you complain about Apple's prices, you must be too "poor" to afford one. STFU. When we bought our beige G3, it was more in line with PC prices, and it BLEW THEM AWAY IN TERMS OF FEATURES. There's nothing wrong with paying an extra bit to have the user experience of the Mac OS, but there is a line there. Why do rich people have Wintel bozes on their desk? I guess they can't afford a Mac. Sh*t dude, my gf's family is rich as f8ck, and she uses a damn Compaq. I'm poor as f8ck, I use a Mac.

Um... on what planet does a $3299 computer cost $4999? Oh, I see. You're talking about the one with two optical drives, 2 GB of DDR RAM and a GeForce 4 Ti. Well by all means configure a Dell like that and get back to us with how much it costs.

Jaguar is $129, yes. Are you insinuating that $129 is expensive for a thoroughly modern operating system? Windows XP costs $199. Where's your justification for calling Jaguar expensive?

And you ask "where is the great apps cost". Not sure what you meant by that, but do you consider FREE to be cheap enough? iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, iSync, iChat, iCal, Inkwell. All 100% free programs. Is that not cheap enough for you? Should Apple be giving YOU money for using them? And that's aside from all the other apps and utilities that you get along with it as well.

Are you seriously trying to make this argument or are you just trolling?

I mean, this is as ridiculous as a Wintel user three months ago saying "I bought an iPod, what, do I need to buy a new computer to get it to work?"

First you ask if we can take constructive criticism... then you say Macs are a rip off? Do you actually know what constructive criticism is? Time to break out the ol' dictionary again, buddy.

Oh by the way... what's a "prives"?

    TWoods99...

That's because there's a myth that rich people buy the best. Most i've come in contact with are the cheapest bastards you'll ever meet. Sure they'll buy a nice house but some dress worse than the avg person and many drive old Volvos. The way to obtain wealth is to spend less that you earn.

Like Alcimedes said. PC users are about to get fleeced. Check MS EULAS and you'll see that they want to usurp as many rights from you as they can.

The biggest complaint that Mac users have is HW...and the "grass is greener" approach. If you think Apple can't compete then look at people who's PAYCHECKS depend on reliability and you'll see Macs in higher percentage numbers there. Building my PC's has been liberating...why?

Built my first machine. Bought an ASUS 40x CD player. It died within 2 months. I didn't want to hassle with shipping it back so I bought the $39 40x special from a local store figuring "hey it's 40x as well" MY GAWG that thing sucked. So I took it back and bought a Kenwood TrueX for twice the price.

This is only one bad experience but it illustrates my point with PC's. The cheap shit never works right so you end up buying the more expensive stuff in the long run.

In the PC arena there's really only a %15 upper echelon of Manuf's that really make reliable HW. The rest will give you a hit or miss. Drivers mean nothing to a Mac user..but Drivers are something to Obsess about in the PC arena.

First off I would like to say I agree with everything the mac enthusiasts have said in this thread. Macs are like luxury cars, in the end they are the better buy because you keep your mac for many, many years. One thing I don't like is how apple's high end macintosh prices on the towers in particualr seem to fluctuate too often and the specs do not warrant this price jump. Im talking mainly about Apple's jump back up to 3,300$ for the high end mac. Apple should settle down and keep set prices for all their pro towers, and shouldn't change those prices when new towers are introduced.

[quote] You see, some people think of Macs as luxury computers. I have not problem with that thought. In just about every market you will find a company that charges a higher premium for a higher quality product that satisfies a core consumer group.

    LOL

Right. Thats very true. But one thing is missing...

Luxury cars usually have a better engine and a great interior to make you feel good. The Mac only has the interior (the OS) and not the engine - so why should I pay full price?

The engine is FINE. Unless you're doing intensive, high end 3D work, there's nothing a PowerMac can't do, and do it FAST. I say 3D, because that's the thing I hear the *real* power users complain about sometimes. (No, if you surf the net for porn, listen to MP3s, and check your email at the same time - you are not a power user. )

Think about how many times a day your Mac sits there waiting for you to do something, compared to how often you are waiting for it.

90% of the people in here could stand a performance upgrade somewhere between their chairs and their monitors alot more than they need the computer sped up.

*Please don't flame me if you're Photoshopping 10 MB images at work all day - I'm not talking about you.

    Okay, I wont.

BTW - I think it would be interesting to buy one of the new Linux equiped Dells and test it against a Mac, then we can basically see if price is worth the OS.
