Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.7 Update

Apple Computer on Tuesday released Mac OS X 10.4.7, a maintenance and security update to its Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger operating system.



The update is recommended for all users and includes general operating system fixes, as well as specific fixes for the following applications and technologies:



sharing using AFP, SMB/CIFS, NFS and FTP file sharing protocols

reliable access to Open Directory, LDAP and Active Directory services

login and authentication in a variety of network environments

file access and byte range locking with AFP file sharing

network access when using proxy server automatic configuration files

connecting to Cisco VPN servers using IP/Sec and NAT

AirPort and Bluetooth wireless connectivity

RAW camera support, including updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers

usability of Dashboard and widgets

searching iWork '06 and Microsoft Office documents with Spotlight

saving Word documents automatically when using a network home directory

viewing of QuickTime streaming media behind a firewall

audio playback in QuickTime, iTunes, Final Cut Pro, and Soundtrack applications

ensuring icons are spaced correctly when viewed on desktop

determining the space required to burn folders

synchronizing contacts, bookmarks, and calendars to .Mac and mobile phones

mounting and unmounting iDisk volumes

time zone and daylight savings for 2006 and 2007

Address Book, AppleScript, Automator, Dictionary, Font Book, iCal, iChat, DVD Player, Keynote, Mail, Preview, Safari, and Stickies

Disk Utility, Keychain Access, Migration Assistant, and Software Update

compatibility with third party applications and devices

previous Mac OS X updates and standalone security updates

Also on Tuesday, Apple released Mac OS X 10.4.7 Server, which is recommended for all servers. The update includes fixes for:



AFP server deadlocks and dropped connections

saving Adobe and Quark documents to AFP mounted volumes

resharing NFS mounts with AFP

configuring up to 64 NFS server daemons in Server Admin

virus filtering and quarantine; update to ClamAV version 0.88.2

updating Kerberos keytab files when using changeip

periodic rolling of Password Server log files

configuration issues affecting MySQL performance

preallocating files when using tar, cp and mv with Xsan volumes

rebooting SAN clients without causing other clients to hang

reporting software RAID rebuild status in Disk Utility

compatibility with third party applications and devices

previous standalone security updates

    the mirror widget "fix" no longer works



    My MBP buzzes/whines/hisses..whatever you want to call it.



    Probably going to revert back to 10.4.6

    I'm eager to get home to my MBP and see if the right-click trackpad trick, which works for both 17" MBPs and plain ol' MBs, finally works for the 15" MBP.

    I am glad you posted that. Piss on .7 if that happens. I hate the buzzy hiss thingy a majiggy. I was so hoping this update would fix the problem.

    As per the usual, I wait about a month (minimum) to see what issues pop up at MacFixit.com before even thinking about updating the software. I've gotten burned in a big, big way before by simply updating without thinking about it...

    for those wondering, you will get your right-click option with this update...."tap trackpad using two fingers for secondary click"



    also, there is "clicking" "dragging" & "Drag Lock (tap again to release)" options



    features I won't be using once I revert to 10.4.6

    lol, installed it, took ages to shut down and ages to start up again and the configuration assistant started up, playing the tiger welcome movie.

    Everything else looks fine to me

    Nope. But there is 3rd party software for that functionality.

    I just updated my MBP and I can nat connect anymore to my Wi-Fi, have to first turn Airport off and then on again for it to can connect to the internet...very annoying issue, guess I'll be waiting with the update of my iMac. Anyone has the same issue ?

    Yes!!! Just rebooted after the update and was about to post the good news myself.



    By the way, about the "whining" people are always talking about... Does it matter if you're plugged into the power adapter or not? Because I do hear a bit of a noise on my 15" MBP -- both now and before I updated -- as soon as I'm running on battery power, but that noise goes away when I plug the power adapter back in. The noise isn't consistent even when staying on battery, as it seems to go away after a while.

    Looks like i'll be the guinea pig for the Server update, unless anyone else is installing now.. gotta do it just for the (hopefully) fixed AFP issue

    Dashboard it performing much better, it starts up a lot quicker. My BBC weather widget is not working correctly though. Other than that things are running smoothly. 10.4.7 where have you been all my life?

    2.16GHz MacBook Pro here. Issues so far:



    About This Mac screen no longer works.

    Won't shut down cleanly, have to open terminal and "sudo reboot" to get to to start shutting down, sticks on screen with grey swirly thing.

    Keyboard hotkeys (brightness, volume etc) no longer work.

    Keyboard & Mouse prefpane makes System Preferences crash.



    EDIT: Turns out it all works, it was all just clogged up waiting about 5 minutes for an AFS connection to fail (wasn't that supposed to be the #1 fix in this patch?) - got the AFS failed to mount dialog, clicked OK and all of the keys I'd hit and the about box showed up at the same time.

    Ok i'm trying to install server, but its been sitting on "configuing installation" for 10 mins - force quit or leave it?



    EDIT: sat on "configuring" for 15 minutes then installed in about two, restarting now....

    Don't revert; there's an *easy* workaround.



    TO EVERYONE WITH WHINING INTEL MACHINES:



    If you want to keep all the improvements in 10.4.7, but want the mirror widget/Photo Booth trick to still work, simply download the USB drivers for Intel 10.4.5 from here:



    http://developer.apple.com/hardwared.../usbdebug.html



    ...after you install 10.4.7.

    Install the non-debug version in the disk image (the one without "log"), restart & the fix will work once more!



    You can even bypass the mirror widget/Photo Booth trick and simply put MagicNoiseKiller.app in your Login Items list for your user account in System Preferences. (It's an app based on development sample code by Apple that also accesses the iSight. The guy who made the app stripped away most of the code, so all it does is connect to the iSight, close the connection, and quit -- and blessed silence is the result.)



    If this worked for you, spread the news on other forii for anyone who might find this helpful. I've been using this solution for months, and it works great.
