[quote] Huh? I thought these machines came preloaded with Jaguar? Are you telling me the OS isn't already on the Hard Drive. Huh? No one ever mentioned this before. <hr></blockquote>

None of the Macs i bought had Mac OS preinstalled, when you started it up the first time it asked for one of the CD's you get with the machine.

Wow, that's weird. Every Mac I've gotten has had the OS installed.

FireWire/USB in front would've been nice. Perhaps the front vents could have also served as ports, with the air flowing into them and around the ports.

NOTHING beats the old QuickSilver case, that was a work of art. I still haven't gotten a peek at the new towers but I'm warming up to them (hehe no pun intended.) I agree, verrrrry tempting, but motorola still sucks.

Those of you in the Portland area, incl. Vancouver, WA, you can check out the new Powermac in person at CompUSA at Jantzen Beach. To my surprise, they already had the dual 867 on display, and they had a sign up for the dual 1ghz also (but no display model yet). They also had the 17" iMac, the first time I've seen one in person.

Oh, and they also marked down their Quicksilver dual 1ghz. This CompUSA store has really cleaned up their Mac section -- just a year ago, they were still selling really, really old iMacs and iBooks at full original price. Now everything's pretty modern and current, and every time I go in there, several people are browsing the Mac stuff.

Drawing on the first link given by apple.otaku above, I see here ( <a href="http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/pc/docs/2002/0819/dscn0105.jpg"; target="_blank">http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/pc/docs/2002/0819/dscn0105.jpg</A>; ) that a plastic speaker cover is shown. To those of you who have received the most recent PowerMacs, did a speaker cover come with your computers?

See, this is where they went wrong. Those holes should not be straight slots with rounded ends. They should have been elliptical ducts. Damn, Apple needs to hire me to straighten stuff out like this!!! What da hell kind of industrial designers they got workin' over there?

    Today i'm a happy Man!

Well there is alot of people out there saying the G4 is slow and in a way it is when you do the same thing on a PC and that PC is going at 3Ghz+, but let me tell you OS 10.2 and this dual mac work best at what I, yes I want to do with MY computer.

I moved up from a 7300/180 604e PowerMac to this new Dual PowerMac 867Mhz. And i know i will be useing this thing for 5 more years to come just like my 7300/180. That old mac is still working and my bro still burns music CD's on it most of the time and does his homework on it too.....LET's see someone in the PC world do that with there 5 year old computer!

But back to this my new Dual PM (am i makeing this clear? )

It is loud, but at the same time i don't mind it. It's not like after useing it for 2,3 or 4 hours you can't stand it any longer and must get out of the room like some have posted. Its just another sound that is in the background of life

But it's not BAD it just there...in the end people...it all up to your selfs if you find it LOUD or not like me.

IS it fast with OS 10.2 HELL yeah! same money 5 months ago would have gotten you WAY less with what you get here people...DUAL and OS X are the WAY TO GO!

    Frank

apple.otaku: In the first set of pictures, I love the reflection of Evian bottles in the mirrored drive bays. Cool! In the second set, I enjoyed the legions of avid photographers swarming around the PowerMac.

The new PowerMac design is really growing on me. It looks significantly better in real-life pictures than in the sterile renderings on Apple's site. I'm still tempted to be cheap and buy an LCD iMac or the low-end (QS867) education tower. But a new PowerMac 867DP would be so nice. I just wish Apple had already introduced the 17" Cinema Display and still shipped black keyboards and mice with the PowerMacs. I already overdosed on white with my iBook.

Mac sold in many (most?) foreign countries (non-American countries, that is) are not sold with the OS installed. You have to install it yourself when you open up the box. Apparently this is a cost-cutting measure.

Neither my iMac, iBook, Sawtooth G4 i bought in the last 2-3 years had Mac OS preinstalled.

But as you might see I live in Sweden, hence my default OS language is Swedish (but I don't like it and use English as my main language). It's easier to just put a Swedish Mac OS CD in the box than installing it and so on.

But I have no idea why my iBook didn't have Mac OS preinstalled since OSX was the main OS (Swedish was main language after install, changed it to English, isn't it wonderful?).

Edit: When I think about it, even thou OSX was the main OS, OS9 was also installed.

And like icruise said, it cheaper to just add a CD to the box.

I have to say that the new Macs cannot be comprehended by studying them on this web. You have to see them in person to really begin to appreciate what a breakthrough product that case is. I am certain that one can populate the inside with easily 6 - 200 GB ATA drives (coming soon to market) for a total of more than 1.1 Terabytes of available storage.

There are 4 fans. Two small ones pushing front to rear through the power supply, one medium fan blowing directly into the side of the dual opticals and one gigantic fan blowing across the enormous heat sink situated in the middle of the insides. There's room for two drives below the opticals and two or maybe even three drives above them. There's also 2 drive slots in the rear under the power supply and behind the heat sink that share the ATA 100 bus.

The mirrored drive doors and frame are all MIRRORED METAL not shiny plastic like the photos would have you believe. Serious metal. And that shiny metal theme includes the rear of the four vent ports. Most of the intake air is undernieth the front NOT through those retro ports.

The box that the computers come in have gigantic blow ups of the ports on the sides. Those ports are almost as cosmetic as the ports on BMW Z1s. But they do look cool.

In the interests of convenience, how come they still don't have at least one USB and Firewire port on the front? Is it that nobody sees the convenience of this, instead of reaching around back everytime you want to plug some portable in? It just seems like a good, "forward-thinking" thing to have by now in a computer, but what do I know?

It certainly is, but if Steve says NO the maclots will defend him no matter what, such is the power of the RDF.
