I was playing with Jaguar at the Mac store on an ibook. It runs fast! Photoshop ran on the ibook as well as the top end Powerbook does on 10.1.5.

Thats fast!

I am buying an ibook. But first I am buying a dual powermac.

Who else has tryied 10.2 on an ibook (a model that suppoert Quarts extreme of course)? Was your experience as good as mine or am I crazy?

I have to agree, Jag makes a HUGE difference on my new 600Mhz iBook. Noticed a big speed increase.

I just got my new Dual 867 and its NICE.

Hm... that sounds good, I can't wait to get Jaguar on my 700 combo iBook. Just waiting for a student ADC mailing with Jaguar... seems like it's a month away.

Jaguar's made a pretty big difference on my 500MHz iBook. I've been using it for the past week and I've definately noticed things are much snappier?.

Same observations here, although I patiently waited for the FedEx man to bring me Jaguar (was lucky enough to get it Thursday). Jaguar has breathed new life into the lame 66Mhz bus of my iBook/500.

OS 10.2 on my iBook 700 is great Quartz Extreme runs very nice on it along with every thing else I notice a big speed increase in normal stuff and the new updated software like Mail, iChat and address book things are looking good and I can't wait for future updates (as long as the next one is free )

Jaguar runs great on my new 700MHz machine. Overall much snappier than 10.1.5. My only issue is the speed at which applications launch when several programs are already running. I guess it's not a Jaguar problem, but rather a memory problem. I only have 256MB of RAM. Perhaps updgrading to 640MB would insure things remain snappy at all times?

I have 384 and don't see any slow down in app launches after having 6 things already running. But if you do upgrade the ram go all the way.

Maybe I'm getting old (each and every day). I haven't noticed if my 600MHz/ATI Rage Pro is any faster for general use. The effects (open/close windows) kind of bug me-- I keep thinking they should be turned off to minimize CPU usage, but that's just the old man in me.

I did time my start up, though. From pushing the ON buttonn to the log-in screen under 10.1.5, it took 1:57. Under 10.2, it's 0:58. I'll take that improvement any day.

RAM makes a HUGE difference. My 933 G4 came with only 256MB of RAM and it was slowing down after only a few apps were open. I upgraded it to 768 and it's like night and day performance wise.

You can change the effect from Genie to Scale in the System Preferences under Dock.

run don't walk and buy as much ram as you can. i just upgraded my pbg4 10.1 machine from 768 to 1 gig and its even FASTER. (same apps open)

and jag will be installed soon enough so it should be faster...

I think he is talking about the effects when you double click on icons like on your desktop how they expand out and than shrink when you close them. I don't know how to do that. But I like little stuff like that because when I got one of my Window user friends looking over my back and they see stuff like that they only wish they had stuff like that and we all know that will never happen.

To the guys with iBooks - have you noticed them running hotter? Several people over at Ars are complaining that the fans in their iBooks are coming on way more often with Jag and running noticeably warmer.

Actually I have noticed that. My fan is on a lot more now along with it being warmer. I wouldn't say it gets hot but it does get warm... with 10.1.5 I never heard the fan come on and I never really felt any type of heat coming from it either. Battery life seem to be about the same on a full charge I can currently get about 4hrs 30mins of battery life with Mac OS 10.2. With 10.1.5 I could probably get 5hrs of batter life out of it. So even though it is running a little hotter and with the fan running more it doesn't seem to affect it much.

I'm running 10.2 on a Powerbook Pismo and chronically run Thermoindock for various reasons. If anything 10.2 runs slightly cooler for me than 10.1.5 and battery life is at least as good-my subjective impression is that it feels cooler as well, but I don't think that's as accurate. Maybe the new iBooks are running a little hotter because they are using quartz extreme and the GPU is running much harder. (My pismo is too old for quartz extreme). I'd been wondering anyway what effect using the GPU more would have on heat/battery life in portables. Anyone know anything about the power/heat efficiency of the GPU vs. CPU? John
