Ok, I've found Unison, an Usenet access app, and found my internet provider server for Usenet access. But what about the User name and password ? Is there a way to log in as an anonymous user ?
don't waste your time with your ISP, they won't carry any good binary groups. Goto www.easynews.com and try them out. They have an web interface so you can download through your browser, they also provide a super-powerful searh engine that you can use to find whatever you need.
There are lots of newsgroups discussions about physics there, and I already pay my internet provider. Why can't I access Usenet too without paying MORE cash to a company !? This is my frustration with this...

If that's all you want, why not use google groups?
OK. A more helpful post...your ISP *should* provide access to usenet, but the reason people generally pay is because ISPs often weed them out (to get rid of the hacking sites, the child porn, the file sharing, etc...)

This is what makes me laugh about usenet. People hype it up saying it's the only true way to have freedom of speech because it's not censored like online forums are. Then you find out you have to pay money to a company to give you access to a limited range of groups that they decide. How is that better? I admit that some stuff shouldn't be accessed but things like hacking aren't always bad because they can uncover security flaws and file sharing can help you get a certain soundtrack that is very rare.
I would have thought the best way to access newsgroups would be in a decentralized way like Limewire. You shouldn't need to subscribe to a service to exchange information freely.
A long time ago, I was able to access usenet from my university, while I was a student. The science (physics) newsgroups were very interesting. Sadly, I can't remember what was the typical "anonymous" username and password.

There are free usenet servers:

but they often block a lot of groups. I personally use Google groups now and again.
alt.binary.pictures..... fill in the blanks
The child pr0n that used to litter the UseNet was not funny though.
