Any favorite MS Office/Word replacements? Free is good.

Also, I need a spreadsheet program like Excel. I am already very proficient in Excel and don't really want to lose that or have to learn a new program. Am I forced into buying the MS Office Suite (it's about $70 at the student price)?

Thinkfree is my favourite alternative. I still generally use Microsoft Word, but Thinkfree is modelled after Word, and if you don't need advanced features like drawings, etc, your good to go. It comes in a free online Java version and a Native Mac downloadable version that is a Universal binary (Intel or PPC Macs)

From what I've seen, it seems like the best alternative to me.

Here's a lean German WP/Database/Spreadsheet app that's whole selling point is that the program is small and fast. Might be worth checking out
